Mendelson Introducing Emergency Gun Bill
Councilmember Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) has decided to submit his gun bill as emergency legislation, the councilmember said today.
Last week Mendelson introduced a bill that would end the city's handgun ban and make it legal for residents to keep firearms in their homes without requirements that trigger locks be used or that they be disassembled. The bill would still require that guns be kept unloaded and disabled, but it would offer an exception for gun owners who say the firearm is present in the home for immediate self-defense.
Mendelson introduced the legislation in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision striking down the District's strict handgun law.
"After opportunity for public discussion and further analysis, I believe it would be prudent for the Council to act on critical provisions of the District's gun law prior to the Council's recess beginning July 16th. We want to comply with the Heller decision while at the same time fulfill our responsibility to protect the residents of the District of Columbia."

Go ahead DC, violate my civil liberties some more. But now I can sue you & collect damages & my attorneys' fees. To made for the still defenseless taxpayers of the District. Fortunate for them Congress will step in & provide some long overdue adult supervision

Please do sue DC. You can help Justice Scalia be even MORE CLEAR (if that's possible) with what he just said in the most recent decision that DC can regulate nearly every aspect of gun ownership. Did you read the case?
