Fenty Injured in Bike Accident

fentybike.jpg

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty flipped over the front of his high performance road bike while training yesterday on Whitehurst Freeway near the Kennedy Center, aggravating an injury to his left foot suffered early this month, his spokeswoman said.

Fenty (pictured above, second from left, in a training ride in May) was at work today, but cancelled several public and private appearances because his doctor has instructed him to remain off his feet, spokeswoman Carrie Brooks said. (Update 4:32 p.m.: Turns out the mayor is at home all day today, but is keeping in touch by BlackBerry, Brooks said.)

Fenty, 37, is well known for his regular training sessions for the many competitive road races and triathlons he participates in. On most Tuesdays and Thursdays, from noon to 2 p.m., the mayor joins the D.C. Velo racing team, of which he is a member, for a 35-mile training ride through Hains Point.

It was during a training session yesterday that Fenty crashed, aggravating the hairline fracture in his metatarsal that he suffered while playing football on the beach with his twin sons on July 4. Despite the initial injury, Fenty had continued training and he and his older brother Shawn had participated in the NYC Triathlon on July 20, while on vacation. Pictures of the mayor in that race can be seen here.

It is not clear whether Fenty completed that triathlon because his times are not among the race results. (Shawn Fenty, 43, finished in 2:27:19, good for 42nd place out of 410 people in his age group.)

Brooks said she is not certain how long the mayor will cut back his schedule. He has been training for the Nation's Triathlon in D.C. on September 14.

Poor fellow. There he was biking, which should have been easy on his foot -- and he messes it up more.

I hope he's got a big bottle of Advil 'cause he's gonna need it.

Yet another reminder to stay clear of the tri-geeks at HP. How the heck does one manage to biff on the Whitehurst? At least he rides I guess.

I'd heard that Jackie (The $50 million woman)Wright the tax scam slug tossed a tree limb through his spokes when he rode by. I guess she really liked her job. Bwahahah!

What a pity Fenty apparently can't handle his "high performance" bicycle.

I'd suggest training wheels, or better yet, restrictions on having such "high performance" bikes on the streets at all.

Maybe restrictions, such as limiting bike use to inside the home, are part of the answer.

Certainly a ban on "high performance" bikes should be part of any solution.

Come to think of it, bikes, of all types, in the U.S. routinely kill more people accidentally than guns.

Of course, Fenty could concentrate on his job as mayor and lay off the extracurricular bike riding altogether.

One less "power" hungry bicyclist to have to contend with in the morning commute.

Nice try bluesteel -- approximately 770 deaths in 2006 (the last year I could find)because of bike accidents -- in 2004 (the last year I could find) there were approximately 29,569 deaths from guns. Maybe whoever you got your stats from was only including accidental deaths from guns (not, I believe, the main thing people fear when it comes to firearms). And then there are the deaths from automobile accidents . . . Me, I feel pretty safe on my bike.

bikes kill people? bikes don't kill people, people on bikes kill people, or themselves, when the bike accidently discharges [the rider].
