Bowser's Boosted By Birthday Bash

Council member Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4) drew a few hundred people to the one-acre backyard of the Takoma home of Daniel and Loretta Neumann Smith last night for a birthday party aimed at raising money for her reelection campaign.

But she got more than cake and a bundle of checks. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D), who stayed out of last year's Ward 4 special election under a gentleman's agreement with Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), endorsed the incumbent. He told the crowd that Bowser had worked hard during her 13-plus months in office and appears to have "universal support."

"If she doesn't get 75 percent of the vote, I will be very disappointed," he said.

Council members Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) and Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) also endorsed her at the event, along with shadow Sen. Paul Strauss (D), also up for reelection.

Fenty was supposed to make an appearance, but he is recuperating from his recent bicycle accident. Bowser told the crowd, "I think you heard that the mayor went head over heels for D.C."

Bowser, who turns 36 tomorrow, is facing challenges from three people, Baruti Jahi, Malik F. Mendenhall-Johnson and Paul E. Montague.

"We don't want to leave any vote. We don't want to take any vote for granted," she said. "We're not just doing it for the sake of politicking. We're doing it for real change."

I am a strong supporter of "Recycling" but not of our elected leaders.

Bowers hasn't done Jack Schitt for ward 4 or DC but only signed her name onto legilations others crafted.

She does not have a mind of her own. She supports any and everything that Fenty TELLS her to support.

She does a disservice to her Ward. She takes up a very important seat on the Council that should be held by someone that would BALANCE the executive not rubber stamp him.

I don't think that the community should take the endorsement of her fellow rubber-stamp councilperson's very serious. OF COURSE they want to protect the status quo.

However, like America was with George W. Bush, if Ward 4 usher's her back into office, you get what you deserve.

She certainly does give herself credit for legislation crafted by others, especially if it's a recycled, dead bill that was introduced by a councilmember who is no longer serving.

You go Bowser. You do have universal support. You have represented Ward 4 well. My parents live in Ward 4.
