Fenty Eases Back With Library Announcement
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is scheduled to make an announcement this afternoon regarding the city's library hours and funding.
Ginnie Cooper, the chief librarian, recently announced major cutbacks for the system, including closing the libraries on Fridays and closing kiosks in some of the city's more underserved communities. It seemed a lot to cut for a $2 million deficit, which Cooper said was the reason for the move.
If we go on history here, chances are good that the Fenty administration will be announcing that he's figured out a way to cover that deficit.
This will also be the first time in days that the mayor will make a public appearance following a biking accident and doctors told Fenty he had to take it easy for a while. Today's news conference with Cooper at 2 p.m. is his only scheduled public appearance.
