Parking Scofflaws
In today's Post, we brought you details of a new Congressional report that found federal and D.C. government workers have ignored hundreds of parking tickets on government-issued vehicles. (The top federal violators in the District were recruiters at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center near 13th and L Streets NW.)
Here's the list of the worst prepetrators in D.C. government, who had the largest delinquent balances, according to the report:
1. Department of Public Works: $10,780
2. D.C. Housing Authority: $4,895
3. Metropolitan Police Dept.: $3,300
4. Community Relations: $2,980
5. D.C. Public Schools: $2,560
Public Works Director William O. Howland Jr. told the Post that most of the city's fleet is registered to his agency, even if the vehicles are then loaned to other agencies. That helps explains why public works has the most fines and why it is hard to determine who is driving each vehicle.
On the bright side, he noted, the report shows that D.C. parking enforment officers "are really doing their job" by writing a lot of tickets.
That's one thing the city's always been good at.
