Sources: Fenty's Inaugural Concert to Benefit D.C. Public Schools

More details are emerging about the inaugural concert Mayor Adrian M. Fenty is planning at the D.C. Armory on Jan. 18. We reported last month that Fenty was trying to land hip-hop superstar Kanye West to headline the show. Now we're hearing from sources that the mayor is also trying for singer Mary J. Blige and possibly another big name. And word has it that the money raised from the event would benefit D.C. Public Schools, which have been Fenty's top priority as mayor. The show is tentatively set to start at 6 p.m., though no word on ticket prices or how to get them. A spokeswoman for the mayor declined to comment when asked about the concert this week.

How much will a venue like this cost the city? What will happen if, like his birthday party, no one attends? Who will track the monies that actually go to DCPS? How would rhee use the money? Would she be here or in California when the donation is made? Would it really help the CHILDREN?

These events are typically not paid through tax payer dollars. Funds are raised through their campaign or non profit arm.

Neither previous birthday parties were paid with tax payer funds AND they had over thousands in attendance.

When did the idea-bulb go-off in the head of the Mayor. It was inevitable that DC would be the host of the events leading up to the Inauguration...so at this late date we are still TRYING to secure headliners, WOW!!! Since the Mayor likes to endorse candidates so early in their political plight...maybe he can start planning for the January 20, 2013 Inauguration NOW!!!! I have a suggestion for the Mayor's re-election campaign...here's a motto "Better Late than Never" or what about "The Early Bird catches the worm."
