Barry Released From Hospital

Ward 8 Council member Marion Barry (D) was released from the hospital at 1 p.m. today, Howard University Hospital spokesman Ron Harris said.

Barry, who turns 73 today, had a kidney transplant on Feb. 20. The surgery was deemed a success and Barry was released from the hospital on Feb. 27.

The former four-term mayor had been scheduled to return to his council duties this week but stayed away after complaining about pain in his abdomen.

He was readmitted to the hospital on Monday night. Doctors said the pain was a result of air pockets near his new kidney and not a rejection of the organ.

The councilmember, who had been on dialysis for the past few months, received a kidney from Kim Dickens, a longtime friend and District resident.
