DC GOP Stays Out of Marriage Fight; Log Cabin Endorses

If Congressional Republicans seek to wade into the battle over proposals to legalize same-sex marriages in the District, they probably won't find an enthusiastic ally in the local District Republican Committee.

Paul Craney, executive director of the District Republican Committee, said yesterday his committee has not yet taken an official position on gay marriage. But Craney noted the local party chairman, Robert Kabel, is the only openly gay state party chairman in the country.

"We don't have an official position yet, but I would be remiss not to say there are a whole lot of members in our committee, and D.C. Republicans in general, who support gay rights," Craney said.

On Thursday, the District's Log Cabin Republican Committee praised the Council for passing a bill to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. The group also called on the Council to approve gay marriage bill for District residents.

"We look forward to the day when the Council votes not just to recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions but gives all District couples - heterosexual and homosexual - access to marriage here in their hometown," said Chris Scalise, president of the DC LCR.
