Fenty: 'Bad Decision' Using Friend as Chauffeur

D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) said he used poor judgment when he allowed his friend to drive a city-owned Lincoln Navigator. "I'm not going to do that anymore," he told reporters this morning. "No more letting anyone else drive."

"I made a bad decision," he said.

Fenty said officials are debating the legality of his permitting 46-year-old Keith Lomax to drive the SUV.

"Nonetheless, it shouldn't have happened and won't happen again."

Whoa - Mayor admits mistake! Perhaps this the beginning of a self-awareness trend or perhaps his lawyer told him that this was a big deal that he couldn't just flip off like a few baseball tickets or the educational future of DC's youth.

Here we are again with The Wash.Post and the imperial Mayor Fenty.I will make my same refrain, this is the worst administration since Mayor Sharon P. Kelley. Mayor Fenty has thumbed his nose at more DC Gov. regulations and orders than any other Mayor since Ex-Mayor Barry's terms as Mayor. But the Washington Post still puts Mayor Fenty up as the poster child of the new wave of leaders in government. It's a sad commentary and legacy for the youth and other young adults, who have aspirations for serving in government for the good of the public.

Between the National ticket fiasco and now Fenty's comment "Because I said he could." its beginning to look like Mayor Fenty graduated from the Marion Barry School of Politics.

The guy is a crook, installing a heater in a pool where he swims, his kids playing ball in a league that is not their age group. nothing is new, he is a crook, and will always be a crook, but hey the people of DC vote him into office.

Apologize? Whatever. Just a bunch of empty words.

Posted by: info40 | May 26, 2009 12:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Talk about (pretending to) not see the forest through the trees.

"Hey, maybe if I apolgize for the driving issue and shift the focus there, people will forget that Lomax a long-time crony and campaign contributor....who has landed nearly $11 Million in city contracts!"

Posted by: cpnich | May 26, 2009 12:28 PM | Report abuse

He and Nickles must have studied the notes from the Kwame Kilpatrick administration when among many other things, he (Kilpatrick) purchased or leased an SUV on the taxpayer dime, for the carte blanche privileges of his wife.

But seriously, FenTool is too arrogant to actually be remorseful. With the firetruck giveaway and the ensuing conflict made worse by Nickles refusal to allow witnesses to cooperate, they would be wise to not provide any more hot buttons.

I exercise my vote, didn't cast a vote for him for Ward4 council or mayor. I hope and pray that a strong contender comes forward to knock him out the box.

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon... you know, cause I've worked in a lot of offices, and I tell you, people do that all the time.

Posted by: lek91091 | May 26, 2009 12:36 PM | Report abuse

If the Mayor is apologizing it is not because he is acknowledging being wrong, that is not his style, it is because he wants this story to go away because it is far too close to revealing other pieces that this story glances over. One being this Lomax "guy" driving the Mayor around, the nature their relationship and the $11 Million dollars in city contracts steered toward him.

What sort of contracts were these? Sole Source? Bid?

If the Post were on their J.O.B. they'd have had an investigative reporter on this Mayors tail (so to speak), a long, LONG time ago.

He tries to be so in the shadows that he is transparent.

Posted by: concernedaboutdc | May 26, 2009 12:40 PM | Report abuse

He finally listened to someone that is advising him. nevermind he already made a statement to the effect that 'it is allowed as soon as he (the dictatorial mayor) decides for the person to do it.' Thus his word is law. Fenty's ego is out of control.

This Mayor of Washington, District of Calumny, is unfortunately the nexus of arrogance, inexperience and incompetence> So happy that I don't live there. Everytime you turn around there is another scandalous usurpation of power or some instance of greed and kleptomania.

Interesting, the Washington Post point-of-view. I believe had that been Marion Barry this story would have been written differently (in a bad way). One thing for sure is Marion provided summer jobs for ALL DC teens. That is no longer the case for this year 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program. I am disappointed in him!!!

I wonder if the apology was made in hopes that this whole episode would be quickly swept under the carpet without anyone digging into the multimillion dollars worth of city contracts awarded to this friend. All done in competitive bidding, I'm sure.

The Mayor admits to an error in judgment and breaking the law AFTER the DC Attorney General declares his decision was legally sufficient.

Pure and simple he got caught! He's only sorry he got caught and was quoted in the Post.Fenty is arrogant, self serving and "good to his friends" He's a crook and as coruupt as they come in politics. He is no Obama and it seems to me as if the President steers clear of Fenty. DC deserves better. Vote Fenty out in 2010!

Posted by: Penny6 | May 26, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

I am with the two other posters. Why did the Mayor apologize after the District's Attorney General issued a public statement saying the Mayor did nothing wrong? Saying that the episode was "legally sufficient"?

Someone wants this story to go away really fast. And it ain't the Attorney General.

Was the Mayor celebrating a pride weekend?

I want to see tomorrow's headline in the Post that outlines the $11 million that went to this guy. Let't get some good investigtive research/reporting back where it belongs. Perhaps subscriptions would pick up. This story should not be ingonred, it should expanded exponentially.

DC will never change until its residents make at least a token effort to not vote 90%+ for Democrats in every election. All it does is ensuring nothing is ever fixed, and that none of the politicians are remotely accountable. If you've tried something for 30+ years and nothing has improved, try something else!

Get the investigation going. Do a detailed background check on Lomax and the company. There's got to something to the fact he received these lucrative contracts. Aside from playing basketball and selling jewelry, what else was he doing? You just don't jump into the landscape and construction business and start winning contracts right away. If there was a bidding process or request for proposal, aside from his friendship with Fenty, what set his company apart from others? Does his company have other non-DC government contracts? Are they of equal or greater value? What has his company done to prove themselves worthy of contracts of this magnitude? Does he get other perks that are intended for the Mayor, but afforded to him, i.e., use of government vehicles, use of government facilities, trips, entertainment, ...etc?

As one of the blogers stated I am not a resident of the District and when Fenty was first elected I used to say I wish all elected officals were more like him because it looked like he was for the people. Now I can truly say he is more like them in a negitive way seeing the way he is conducting himself. Has anyone ever seen him on Fox 5 on thursday? He answers only the questions he wants and he makes the news anchors look small. he shuts them down and makes them move on to the questions he wants to answer. for example the nats tickets. he told them that the media was only interested in how these tickets were passed out and not the people of the district. when it was shown to him the emails from people who wanted to know why he is holding the tickets hostage he just blew it off. I cant believe that he thinks its ok to install a heater at the facility that he uses and with other govt run programs that are being cut that this is a priority. but he says its a pliot program....BS I bet none of the other pool facilities will see a heater installed at there local pools. and for what? the pools are only opened during the summer and if I am not mistaken this is not an outdoor pool facility. This should make anyone who is not registered to vote to get out and vote because there is no need to complain if you didnt take the time to vote.

Fenty is uncomfortable taking a backseat to an unknown driver. He needs a close friend to make him feel more safe and secure, especially since he has screwed over so many people. Hitler was the same way.

I am not surprised with Mayor Fenty. Media should unveil who are the city contractors donated money to Fenty and other DC politicians. There is enough corruption and contract steering going on in DC Government and DC residents and business pay generous taxes and receive inadequate services in return. DC taxpayers deserve transparency and competency.

The worst part of this latest Prince Adrian bit of arrogance is the reaction of the man who is supposed to be the lawyer for the people of the District, Peter "Virginia Gentleman" Nickles. Once again Nickles proves that he is the Mayor's lawyer and that the rest of us can eat cake. $11mm in contracts? And where was Lomax driving the Prince that hizzoner doesn't want us to know? Don't expect the Post to dig into Lomax. Remember the Post has its own special deal with the Mayor to get stories first.

Am I missing something or what? It appears that Mayor Fenty feels that it can ignore laws, hold tickets hostage, cut funding for projects that will benefit the residents of DC and hire his friends for large contract work and not believe he is accountable for it. This type of arrogant behavior should be unacceptable to all voting residents of Washington, DC. I, sincerely hope that the City Council and the residents of the Nation's Capital put him in his needed space.

Mayor Fenty has been in too much trouble lately. I don't think he understand the political issues in DC area. He has too many friends are supporting him and wanted more money for campaigning for next year. One of his friends want to drive the car for him, giving away tickets to his friends instead of city councils, sold fire trucks to Dominion Republic, and high crimes in DC. Come on...get real...has he took law school? Umm...think about it...:(

It truly amazes me! Mayor Fenty commits criminal activities, and folks jump to defend him! Then the even bigger problem they don't even question the fact that friends are getting multimillion dollar contracts, warning flags should be jumping! Make all the excuses you want, first we have Peaceoholics or should we say Pedophileoholics and fire equipment brokers, then Peter Nickles a person I don't trust far as I can see him, and now this deal! If you have so much belief in Fenty, then truly you'll fall for anything! Fenty friends list consist of slumlords, thieves, drug dealers, and embezzlers that beats Rod Blagojevich criminal activity any day!

Although Mayor Fenty is not my cup of tea, I truly hope this man doesn't end up in some homosexual or adulterous scandal. Why is a 38 year man hanging out with a his now 45 year old ex teacher from Mackin High School? Back during 1986, Fenty had to be about 17 and this teacher was 24. I hope there wasn't any homosexual activities between these two individuals. A lot of homosexual affairs and experiences occurred at Catholic High Schools between Catholic Priest instructors/teachers and male students. I should know, I had a sexual affair with a Jesuit Priest while I was in high school. There are rumors, the mayor plays both sides of the tracks if you know what I mean. Being married to a female and having children doesn't mean nothing. Do you all remember the former Governor of New Jersey married twice with children?

Stay with the fire trucks and the peaceafelons. Give more details about the Ritz Carlton episodes. Who's he "swimming" with in that pool. Just stick with it! This is good!!!

Do we need to ask who had the tickets?????

southyrndiva, as I stated, these are just rumors. I wouldn't be surprised if they were found to be true. A lot of men, particularly black men are living on the downlow. When does the mayor has time to spend with his wife. The mayor is never home and he seems to always be in the presents of another man hanging out. Women should be leery of men who constantly hang out with other men. Even if the other man is married, these is some warning signs. A good storyline was on Law and Order Special Victims Unit "Lowdown" about all these black married professional men hanging out on Wednesday nights playing cards. It turns out, the men use this as an excuse to tell their wives, but they were having DL sex with one another and one guy contracted HIV and had given it to his wife. Michael Beech stared in this episode. Women, please be careful!
