Barry Vows to Raise $100,000 for Quake Victims

D.C. Council member and former mayor Marion Barry (D) vowed Monday to spearhead an effort to raise $100,000 in the coming weeks for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

Barry, who said he has already donated $1,000 of his own money to relief efforts, is also calling on Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) and Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) to travel to Haiti to evaluate the relief efforts. Barry is dubbing the effort "DC Delivers: Help for Haiti."

"I am asking that the District of Columbia government join me for a citywide crusade to raise funds and supplies on behalf of the people of Haiti," Barry said. "The situation in Haiti has touched my heart so that it has compelled me to personally donate $1,000 of my personal funds to the relief effort."

In recent years, Barry's financial situation has been well publicized after he was convicted in 2006 of failing to pay his taxes, causing the IRS to garnish his wages.

In separate letters to Gray and Fenty, Barry said he couldn't stand by while the people of Haiti suffer.

"As a public servant, I believe it is my duty to help in any capacity that I can even when it steps outside my jurisdiction," Barry said. " I ask you, along with the entire City Council, step up to the challenge and join me in personally donating and publicly raising whatever funds you can."

Neither Gray nor Fenty were immediately available for comment. Fenty appeared Sunday night at the BET Honors at the Warner Theater to help publicize the network's planned telethon. Fenty has also been working closely with the Haitian Embassy to coordinate relief efforts.

The District of Columbia have a $666 million deficit and unemployment in the District is around 12% or more. Where do Barry think people are suppose to get money to give to the Haitian government? Many D.C. residents are robbing Peter to pay Paul. Our local legislators do not need to go down to Haiti and if they do, let if be on their time and money, not D.C. taxpayers. Where was Ward 8 Councilmember Barry and the others, when Mayor Fenty closed and privatized the D.C. Department of Mental Health. Many mental health consumers are not receiving care.

Why are white U.S. citizens adopting black Haitian babies and not black U.S. citizens?

Too be honest, I am overwhelmed with the amount of news coverage on the Haitian crisis and the imagines are depressing to see over and over. I am very sorry for what happen in Haiti and my heart goes out to them, but there's so much negative going on in the United States. Many U.S. citizens are without jobs and illegal immigration is out of control. Is the U.S. going to take in 8 million poor uneducated non English speaking Haitians? I can assure you, the U.S. will be a third world country within 5 years or less. U.S. citizens are doomed!!!!

Charity starts at home! Is this yet another attempt at public recognition? I have been attempting to meet with Marion Barry and the Council for over a year. Communicating with the various Agencies within DC government is absolutely upspeakable. I have never in life witnessed the lack of regard for constituency by these so-called public servants employed within the various agencies!. Afford me a meeting with your self and the Council and I will donate!
