Cheh: Council should 'condemn' Barry's actions

D.C. Council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) is the first council member to respond to today's release of Attorney Robert S. Bennett's investigation into how Council member Marion Barry managed tax dollars.

In a statement, Cheh is urging her colleagues to "condemn" Barry's actions and refer Bennett's findings to the U.S. Attorney's office.

'Nothing has been hidden. Nothing has been held back," Cheh said of Bennett's report. "So now we must implement the recommendations in Mr. Bennett's report and move forward with the reforms already started by the Council."

In his report, Bennett concluded Barry personally benefited from a city contract he awarded to his former girlfriend, Donna-Watts Brighthaupt. Bennett, who accused Barry of violating the law, also believes Barry enriched some of his friends and supporters by steering earmarks to organizations that they ran. Furthermore, Bennett alleges Barry "attempted to impede" his investigation by "refusing to answer material questions related to his conduct and by advising a material witness to withhold documents."

Barry denies any wrongdoing.

As we speak, Barry is now addressing his hardcore followers about Mary Cheh:
"B**ch set me up! Time for a in-yo-face protest march. Somebody git me Al and Jesse. Yo, LaDontrelle! You and LaTawnYette see about gittin us some candles too, we make it a candlelight vigil when it be dark. Git some bibles too. The White man be sorry he ever messed with me, for real."

No member of this Council has the standing except maybe Phil Mendelson to point fingers at Marion Barry.

What a typically elitist limo liberal twit Cheh is turning out to b pointing fingers from her all white, all rich, citadel of Ward 3. This woman has the depth of a coat of varnish.

Meanwhile, paper bags filled with cash were finding their way into Jim Graham's office and no peep from Cheh et al.

Yet ANOTHER EMBARRASING moment for the city in a long line of embarrasing moments from this idiot.. The Mayor and the rest of the city council need to stand-up and kick his butt out of office..

So who's surprised. Everyone knows that some council members steer contracts, etc. to the benefit of friends and family.

Who decided to hire Bennett and how much was he paid to come up with the obvious?

An additional question remaining for the Council is the implementation of a meaningful sanctions regime that will enforce the ethical obligations that were adopted last year in response to the Barry fiasco. Without such an enforcement mechanism, the ethics code put forth by the Chairman is meaningless.

There must be serious consequences for bad behavior in order for an ethics code to be meaningful and for people like Barry to be held accountable.

Barry will come through this. And DC will wonder why they never will get statehood.

Peabody 2's post is childish and irresponsible. Few of us (none of us?)like Marion Barry, but we dont need to resort to racist crap to make a point. AW

The DC Council doesn't have the gumption or the backbone to even censure Marian Barry. He should be jailed, and they cannot even officially chide him.

DC is a joke.

The DC Council does not have the power to put Barry in jail. Also, there is no evidence that "the current mayor is robbing us blind" That's the Nixonian defense "everybody does it".

Black folk don't care if one of their own is "getting over", in fact it's applauded.
That's why the city is doomed, along with Detroit and other cities.

"Getting over" at taxpayer expense is hardly limited to black folk. Also, while the council is doing its prosecutorial roundup of corrupt government officials who commit contemptible acts, they ought to cut the snake off at the head---send Fenty to the feds also.

Marion Barry represents the worst of the Black culture, not the best. He keeps the ignorant and poor folk down so he can manipulate them. While most poor Black see him as God, the rest are ashamed...the mentality in DC is worst than in a thrid world country. The values are the same than in the most underdevelop populations...just the basic needs food, shelter, no pride in the work, no care for contributing to society.

The most dangerous part of this situation is that Barry has power and influence. He also has spent time mentoring other corrupted councilmembers like Harry Thomas.
As long as we continue accepting Marion for who he is we continue jeopardizing the future of our children in the city.
He needs to be removed from office and for once we need to demand from DC officials a different behavior.
