Council censures Barry, will ask U.S. attorney's office to consider case

The D.C. Council has censured Marion Barry and referred allegations that he misused taxpayer funds to the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible criminal investigation.

The move stems from a report by Washington attorney Robert S. Bennett that concluded that Barry personally benefited from a $15,000 personal service contract he secured for his on-again, off-again girlfriend Donna Watts-Brighthaupt.

Barry has apologized for poor judgment but has maintained that he broke no laws.

Ooooh - an official reprimand. That'll teach Marion Barry not to engage in illegal behaviour, I'm sure.

I hope the U.S. Attorney goes after the rest of the council too. Sounds like Barry wasn't the only one with his hand in the pot.

I think today's D.C. Council action was proper and long overdue. Marion Barry's tenure in the city has expired. Today, his "public service" is far less about doing what's best for the city and more about his own ego. I was once one of those who was intoxicated by the former mayor however the city now seems to suffer from a Barry-induced hangover.

Least it wasnt a hooker, a hotel room & crack cocaine.

This incident was OFFICALLY a crooked DC politican(Barry). When will the Ward 8 residents & DC residents learn that Marion Barry only wishes to line his pockets with ca$h & he doesnt give a ratz a$$ about DC, or its residents?

Perfect example of Democracy in action.

He perfectly represents the slime ball crack-head down low constituents who keep re-electing him.

This was $15,000 not the 4 million that the Mayor transferred to D.C. Housing Authority and dole out in contracts to Fraternity Brothers without the requisite skill set to carry out the scope of work.

If what Barry has done deserves punishment, what Fenty has done deserves prison.
