Marion Barry plans 'quiet birthday party'

Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) said he is planning a low-key 74th birthday celebration Saturday.

He's had better pre-birthday weeks. His council colleagues on Tuesday unanimously censured Barry, stripped him of his committee chairmanship, kicked him off of another committee and referred public corruption allegations against him to the U.S. Attorney's Office for possible prosecution.

"I'm probably going to have a quiet birthday party," Barry said.

That would differ from Barry's days-long celebrations of the past. Last year, his birthday followed a kidney transplant. He received a warm welcome from colleagues with a sheet cake and balloons. To recognize his 72nd birthday, actress Vivica A. Fox sang to him at Anacostia High School.

"I'm saving the big one for 75," Barry said.

It will be a fundraiser for foundations for scholarships, kidney transplants and leukemia, the cause of death of former wife Effi Barry, he said.

Quiet Birthday means no crack, no hookers or no hotel rooms paid for by a lobbyist.

Giving Marions "zest" for life, does he really think he will see 75?

The hard/fast life he has lived for the past 40 years, I've been shocked the man has lasted as long as he did.

Between his 3 decade long crack problem, a lifelong issue with diabetes, alcoholism that led to a kidney transplant, the decades of adultery etc, a normal person wouldn't have made it out of his 50's.

Hopefully, this will end up being his last birthday.

Barry is an ex-crackhead who has known health issues. He won't be with us for too much longer...

His obituary will read mainly of corruption

Tick tock, Tick tock

Barry will be around for YEARS. He's probably had enough crack, booze, and diseases flowing through his veins that they have begun to act in concert as a preservative.

Barry just got caught. If you presume sitting council persons, particularly with years on the dais, don't have plenty of dirt in their closets, you are both unfortunate and naive'.

Politics is not Sunday School. You elect people to office and people are flawed. ALL of them. Remember Jesus died thousand's of years ago. None since He is perfect.

Jesus wasn't perfect, wasn't he half human? Do you have any evidence he was "perfect"? Did he claim to be perfect?

You can take your idiotic theology and go get an education and maybe one day, when you get older, you'll stop believing in fairy tales.

Each of you should really be ashamed of yourselves saying such evil things about Marion Berry. No one is perfect..I wonder what perfect lives you and your family members live ... do you wish that it was your mother's last much alcohol does your uncle or aunt have lasting a long time in their system..and what will your obituary read..seeing that you have no compassion and probably no friends..

Marion Barry has been a cyst on the back of DC for decades. Only recently has DC begun to recover from his corruption.

If you met him person, you'd probably like him, he has a unique charisma few people have, he seems to be an incredibly intelligent person (majoring in organic chemistry in college)and he is truly a "self made man".

... however, he will go down as one of the worst mayors in the history of DC self-rule. Mourning Barry is like mourning the passing of Richard Nixon.

DC would be a nicer city if Barry never existed.

OMG, your comment is hilarious. You essentially summed up what the rest of us are thinking about Barry.

Maybe Marion Barry can commiserate over drinks with NY Governor David Paterson and CBC founder Charlie Rangel (D-NY)? They can start their own "Unethical Society"!

We should pity the less fortuanate hoes and foes of Marion S. Barry. We need to let him be peaceful and ask him to resign from office and ridicule he brings to my peeps in Ward 8 whom are always/mostly late.
