Fenty hopes to attend funerals for Southeast massacre victims, sources say

The word around the John A. Wilson Building is that Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) will try to attend several, if not all, of the funerals for the men who were fatally shot last week in Southeast.

Mafara Hobson, a Fenty spokeswoman, did not immediately respond to questions about the mayor's plans. But sources say Fenty wants to attend the funerals.

Big city mayors are usually no strangers to funerals as they seek to fulfill the role of comforter-in-chief. Fenty, however, has appeared hesitant at times to embrace that role.

In December, dozens of current and elected officials attended Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin's funeral, but Fenty was noticeably absent. WTOP radio later reported that Fenty was spotted at a Wizards game in Miami with his wife, Michelle, on the same day as Pollin's funeral in Washington.

Fenty was also criticized last summer for failing to attend several of the funerals for the victims of the Metro train crash. One of the memorial services that Fenty missed was that of Maj. Gen. David F. Wherley Jr. and his wife, Ann. David Wherley was the commanding general of the D.C. National Guard from July 2003 to June 2008.

But Fenty, who is up for reelection this year, may now be trying to rehabilitate his image in the eastern part of the city.

Last week, some Southeast residents taunted Fenty when he showed up a day late at the site of the scene of the March 30 shooting, which left four dead and five wounded.

The residents questioned why Fenty did not rush to the scene the night of the shooting, suggesting he would have done so if a similar event took place in a wealthier community. The mayor was in Jamaica on vacation with his wife at the time.

What an interesting choice of words,"rehabilitate his image". It must have been a little difficult writing this article.

The election campaign is now in full swing... so Emperor Adrian has no choice but to hold his nose and sacrifice some of his precious triathlon practice time by venturing into the 'hood.

But if he behaves true to form, expect a phalanx of advance men to precede Hizzoner to each scene, plastering the streets with signs and banners touting Fenty's name in giant letters.

Fenty is out of town just like all of the other Mayors of DC. It's sad to see a city with such crime on the streets and crime in the goverment that the Mayor does not now how to fix anything so they take what they can get when they are in office and run. It comes down to the people of the city holding him accountable and get out and vote. It is time to stand up and be counted.

Don't forget when he went to Arthur Daniels funeral in a WHITE SUIT!

As for being taunted in Southeast, they taunt everyone down there. No big deal.

this has to be a joke Fenty is only going to the Funerals so he can get votes out of the southern end city, but its a little to late to try an "rehabilitate his image".

I could probably take this article more seriously - and would feel the writer took it more seriously if the article actaully included some neighborhood names were the incident happened, etc. It used to get on my nerves now it just makes me mad the lack of attention to detail and accuracy the Post skips over when reporting on news in "Southeast" even when it occurs in "Southwest". For the love of God please stop painting everything with the same Southeast brush. Its a qudrant of the city for God's sake not a kingdom.

Once Hizzoner has confirmation that camera crews will be there, you can BET that so will he.

Mayor Fenty cares for anyone in SE DC? C'mon now, April Fool's Day was last Thursday. Adrian Fenty is a crook who belongs in prison. Vote for ANYONE BUT FENTY. Go Gray!

They do taunt everyone. The standard response is: "Whatever! Whatever!"

It's amazing to see black people defend criminality using neigborhood pride as the vehicle.

Congressheightsontherise, whether it was SE or SW, what's your point? Ward 8 is still a hell hole whether you want to believe it or not. Just because this latest round of senseless violence didn't begin in Ward 8, SE, or Congress Heights doesn't mean that it doesn't have a higher likelihood of occuring there.

And before you start that obfuscation game, I don't give a damn about what you have to say about other quandrants of the city having their own problems... that's obvious. SE however, seems to have greater numbers of those problem than any other quadrant. The data bears this out -- I'm not making it up.

I am also not blasting you for having neighborhood pride or for being vested enough in your area to accentuate the positives, but you also have to balance that with a dose of reality.

Why should Fenty waste his time going to these funerals? He didn't know any of the victims personally. No disrespect to the families of the deceased but with all of the senseless killing in DC (& SE in particular) Fenty could spend almost every day for the rest of his term going to funerals. Fenty's presence at the funerals is not going to bring any of the victims back. The residents of communities that do these senseless killings should worry more about trying to prevent the next shootout instead of worring about which dignitary or politician will be attending the funerals. Raise your kids people!

We all know this would be easy for candycane to write. The mayor would appear to have pulled the trigger, and he would be showing up at the funerals to finish off the families. candycane belongs on the Faux News Network, or maybe working for TMZ.
