Hispanic leaders to ask for D.C. resolution boycotting new Ariz. immigration law

Hispanic leaders are preparing to ask the D.C. Council to take up a resolution calling for a city boycott of Arizona over its tough new immigration law.

Juan Carlos Ruiz, director of the Latino Federation of Greater Washington, said lawyers are currently looking into how such a boycott would operate. Ruiz said he hopes the council could take up the resolution as early as next week.

The resolution could be modeled after one the San Francisco Board of Supervisors plans to take up today in response to the new Arizona law that allows police to stop anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally.

That resolution calls for the San Francisco city government to stop doing business with Arizona and Arizona-based companies.

"This is important to do because we cannot allow discrimination at any level," Ruiz said. "This is a time when the country needs unity, and what (Arizona) is doing is targeting Mexican and Central Americans. We cannot stand by and do nothing about it."

The liberal council is not one to shy away from contentious national political debates, but given congressional oversight it sometimes has to pick and choose its battles wisely.

Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) said Hispanic leaders have not approached him about a resolution, but he expects that he and his colleagues will give it serious consideration.

"The Arizona law is a crime against civil rights, so we view that very, very seriously," Graham said. " There is no question about it, I would want to carefully and sympathetically consider" a possible resolution.

Hispanics are estimated to represent about 10 percent of the city's population. Even though their numbers are less than in some other major cities, Ruiz said he hopes the council will get on board with a resolution because of the city's record of fighting for civil rights.

"Our history is fighting for civil rights and human rights, and this is one more issue in which all of us need to be together," Ruiz said.

If you're here illegally, you don't have any rights.

Its amazing that these ILLEGALS come to our country because they are fleeing the poverty and crime of their own country. Conditions that they created. We do not want our country to turn in to your country. What is so hard to understand about the term ILLEGAL ALIENS. For all of you liberal p.o.s. go get a dictionary and look it up.

Posted by: DCFanatic | April 27, 2010 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Now, how about the rest of us organizing a boycott of cities/states that have sanctuary policies, beginning with San Francisco, Los Angeles and MoCO? Such policies are ALREADY against federal law.

Posted by: Ali4 | April 27, 2010 2:39 PM | Report abuse

I fully SUPPORT the Arizona law. It is about time someone is coming down hard on ILLEGAL aliens. They have no rights here and they use our services, costing us greatly. They need to be sent back to their own country and try to make it a better place to live. They are ruining ours.

Posted by: katesgram | April 27, 2010 2:56 PM | Report abuse

Let's see. Illegal aliens are breaking the law YET Hispanic activists want to use the law to go after those who are merely trying to uphold/enforce the law. This is selective law enforcement. And how can Mexico denounce the Arizona law when Mexico deports ALL illegal aliens. Mexico has ZERO tolerance for the illegal aliens in their country.

Obviously Mexican Nationals and other Hispanics
are upset because American citizens are fighting back and throttling illegal immigration mostly from Mexico.
You had better believe we American citizens
are fighting mad.
Your illegal alien pets are murdering our citizens EVERYDAY and taking over neighborhoods Americans are not allowed to live in because Latinos don't want them there.
THE SLEEPING GIANT HAS RISEN.
And like the Japanese found out decades ago
WE ARE UNSTOPPABLE.

Get out of the U.S. if you are illegal.
(by the way I am Hispanic)

I have spoken with several "Legal immigrants" regarding the plight of the undocumented (Illegal aliens) and almost to a person the sentiment is the same, (get out and come in the right way like I did).I can't see what all the hoopla is about because Arizona has enough backbone to enforce the laws set down by the federal Government. If these undocumented persons are in this country they are criminals, just the same as a bank robber .They is no gray area here.

Posted by: sqthomas | April 27, 2010 3:39 PM | Report abuse

Because the federal government refuses to enforce the immigration laws we let the problem fester? Arizona has taken the bull by its horns. The positive results are being realized already! The illegal aliens are being re-routed by the Mexican government to States that are more accepting to people in pursuit of criminal carriers.

Criminality means forging documents, evading taxation and stealing by collecting benefits paid for by the US citizens. We would end up in court or jail if we refuse to pay taxes, sign up for the mandatory health insurance or drive without ....? Not so for the illegals who have created their own underground economy outside the reach of the revenue departments, our police and most of our courts.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that hordes of illegal aliens are protesting frantically against the threat of the loss of its privileged status and the attempts to expose their shadowy activities which will bring them out of the shadows and into the light of the IRS.

Arizona is doing the right thing in forcing the federal government to put its inherently discriminatory and racists Immigration Reform Bill back at the top of the U.S. agenda which will reward the criminals the government has labeled as the Latino race. Forget those other races that wait patiently in line using the legal process to citizenship.

Yeah, I find it hilarious that the illegals are using the law they are admittedly breaking, as a shield to prevent their deportation. A little ridiculous.

I am all for liberal "LEGAL" immigration laws, but there have to be some laws. And its pretty easy..you are either here legally or not. Simple.

The biggest problem was an example I saw on the local news yesterday of some illegal in Prince William County. She got pulled over in her car (which she was driving illigally I might add as she didn't have a license). The cops called ICE and imprisioned her. The problem is she has had 3 anchor babies in the 7 years she has been here. Those kids are America citizens even though she isn't, so she will get to stay.

Ridiculous...

Hey, Juan, boycott this. Right here. Time to take the family to the Grand Canyon again.

I say, DC should pass a resolution standing by the AZ law-- matter of fact, we should implement one here too-- and the police can start with cleaning up my neighborhood-- getting rid of the drunks passed out in front of the home depot on RI Ave. I'd welcome some cleaning up of my neighborhood. Illegal is just that-- illegal. If you want the right to protest, then come here legally. Period.

Just what DC needs to counter gentrification--more illegals! We have enough of our own native-born criminals.

FIRST OF ALL, LET ME ASK YOU, 'who made this country???' I KNOW IT WASN'T ANY OF YOU.
I AGREE GET RID OF ALL THE CRIMINALS THAT DO "illegal things" BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ONES THAT WORK, PAY TAXES, HAVE "LICENSES" AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE ECONOMY OF THIS COUNTRY???? WHAT ABOUT THEM, THE ONES WHO WORK HARD JUST LIKE YOU, TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILY??????

I BET IF YOU SEE A PERSON IN THE STREET YOU WOULD JUST SAY "there goes that ILLEGAL immigrant" just because of how they "look" (STEREOTYPING)

ALL OF YOU PEOPLE FROM ARIZONA YOU ARE STANDING ON WHAT ONCE WAS ""MEXICO""

I JUST PRAY TO GOD THAT ONE DAY HE'LL OPEN YOUR ""IGNORANT"" EYES AND MAKE YOU SEE.

ALL YOU WHITE "EUROPEAN" BLACK "AFRICAN" DONT HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL US TO LEAVE, UNLESS YOU LEAVE FIRST.

NATIVE AMERICANS ARE THE RIGHTFUL PEOPLE TO TELL US THAT.

SO STOP BEING ""ignorant""

and by the way i was an illegal for 15 years, now Im a CITIZEN and people like you make be ashamed of it.

GOD BLESS YOU........

Illegal immigration is out of control here in D.C. and around the country. F these so called Hispanic leaders who's asking the D.C. Council to sign a resolution against the Arizona bill. We need a bill like this too in D.C. and the surrouding suburbs.

Posted by: Ward4DC | April 27, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

When I read some of the statements the supporters of illegal immigrants shout I can only shake my head and wonder when did when did we fall down the rabbit hole (as in Alice in Wonderland).

They are up in arms about the Arizona immigration bill. This bill is the federal governments current immigration policy. The federal government doesn't have the man power to effective enforce its immigration policy. Arizona has taken on some of the responsibility.

Hispanic leaders want other government entities to boycott Arizona because of the immigration bill it passed. As stated before this bill states the policy of the US government. Will Hispanic leaders later on call for other government entities to boycott the US if they don't like the final immigration bill congress passes?

Juan Carlos Ruiz, director of the Latino Federation of Greater Washington says the bill is targeting Mexican and Central Americans. Well duh. This is Arizona. Not many Canadians comming across the border. I guess if the state of North Dakota wanted to enforce the immigration policy the director of the Canadian Federation of Greater Washington would be screeming racial profiling.

Knowing from where these racist comments come from you MX1-4EVER is just as bad as them. What you've been here 15 years and I see that you turned out to be a "TRUE AMERICAN". I'm so for everyone getting equal rights including you and of course, you seem to fit right in. SHAME ON YOU!
Be positive to your Hispanic culture and don't insult other minorities just because you got your papers! The Hispanics I know are a proud people who don't feed into this stupid hateful garbage nor accuse another culture for the shortcomings of individuals. It's enough dealing day by day and as a (minority) you should know. Stop lumping other minorities into your spew of hatred. It's hard enough dealing with inbred racism this country does and for you to be a transient who become an American Citizen criticize another minority is dead wrong.
Don't feed into these as you call them ignorant bloggers who only show themselves went they post. These people are the same ones, who like you come from immigrant status although they were born here. These folks think that they have the right and privilege afforded to them because of who they "think" they are. By the way, when you’re using God’s blessing remember GOD don't hate! Marinate on that for a minute!
You must also remember before you came here, there where other minorities that died and opened doors for you and still to "them" are second class citizens. Are you developing that imperialist attitude? Is that the culture and legacy you want to leave? Keep thinking like them!

Fix the broken immigration system, don't punish the victims of racism, poverty and discrimination in BOTH sides of the border.

Undocumented immigrants are mostly Native Americans who speak Spanish, not Hispanics as the white supremacist media like to call.

Racist profiling laws will only increase violence, social conflicts, it will destroy families, hurt the poorest of this nation and it will not make the U.S. any safer, nor will solve the immigration crisis.

At the end, this only will give more profits to the military and prison industries, while promoting hatred and racism.

Let me see if I got this right.

If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor.

If you cross the Iranian border illegally, you are detained indefinitely.

If you cross the Afghan border illegally, you get shot.

If you cross the Saudi Arabian border illegally, you will be jailed.

If you cross the Chinese border illegally, you may never be heard from again.

If you cross the Venezuelan border illegally, you will be branded a spy and your fate will be sealed.

If you cross the Cuban border illegally, you will be thrown into political prison to rot.

If you cross the U.S. border illegally you get:

1 - A job,

2 - A drivers license,

3 – A social security card,

4 - Welfare,

5 - Food stamps,

6 – Credit cards,

7 - Subsidized rent or a loan to buy a house,

8 - Free education,

9 - Free health care,

10 - A lobbyist in Washington ,

11 - Billions of dollars worth of public documents printed in your language,

12 - And the right to carry your country's flag while you protest that you don't get enough respect.

I just wanted to make sure I had a firm grasp on the situation.

Since Obama is looking into fighting this law, people will be thrilled. With the help of the Internet, people from all over the world will know, book a flight to Mexico, hop the border, have it all at the American tax payers expense. Perfect!!! Thanks OHB

illegal is a behavior, not a race. It's not anyone's fault but the Hispanics that they feel guilty enough due to their total lack of respect for American laws that they shout racial profiling. If it were 20 million Eurpoeans here illegally, the Hispanics would be marching against illegal immigration right along with other people of color. They just personally don't want to be responsibile for their own actions and we have enough crooked politians to make it so for them. People in congress should be giving Arizona a high five for enforcing the law. Instead we have a muslim loving white hater as a president that cannot wait to get millions of poor uneducated people here to control with finances drawn from the arms of tax payers who don't want this burdon. Someone needs to tell Obama that Americans are out of work. Oh I forgot, he doesn't care because most of his supporters have always been out of work.

Just to get on an airplane to fly from one US city to another I have to: Show Government issued ID. I cannot have any liquids or gels in excess of 3 oz. I must remove my shoes. I should (just to be safe) remove my belt. I must remove my jacket. I must take my computer out of its carrier. If concerned about any item in my purse or other luggage xrayed, they have the right to search my belongs. If selected they will body search me with an electron wand and pat me down.

Now all that to ensure that 100-200 people get from point A to point B within the US safely. However, it seems that if you are on the ground, it is open season on citizens. Illegals have not in the past had to show proper ID, they drive without a license and if taken to court and found to be illegal, most are released back into society with a promise to "show up" LOL yeah right. If an illegal is murdered, all hell breaks loose. America sends their border patrol people to prison for harming an illegal, with drugs on their person to book. Illegals sue Americans if they are not treated properly. Illegals cannot be prosecuted if they stole a SS number and and idenity unless they KNEW that person was alive. Illegals have their children born at our expense and signed up for Medicare before leaving the hospital. Americans, at least the ones in my social circle pay for their hospital stays or have their property attached.

Now folks, it can't be just me that sees the injustice in these lopsided evaluations of American citizens VS illegals.

Americans have likely had enough. Now if enough illegals have stole enough identities that they show up at the voting booth, I'll guarantee you we will loose our country. The Democrats drool over the thought of 20 million more poor people under their thumb getting entitlements paid for and meant for American citizens. They don't care, don't expect them to. Do something for yourself and your country. Vote these people out. Support Arizona and demand the safety and security on the ground that the government mandates for the airways.

Since the council will be considering boycotting the Arizona bill, will they also be turning off the photo radar cameras since the contract is operated by a company based in Arizona.I doubt this very much. It would mean too much lost revenue. Since 1999, the D.C. government has recieved over $310 million in fines with an Arizona company recieving a portion of every ticket.

MX1-4EVER, I am American Indian and (obviously)a minority American. I, in no-way-shape-or-form advocate foreign nationals entering/working-in/exploiting our welfare system/ID fraud etc etc. whether a minority or otherwise, PERIOD!

Using this cheap ruse by citing us as a people to directly or indirectly make a rhetorical talking point really peeves me and is highly insulting! We are here too actually...still.

latinoalien- Most modern Latinos ARE highly insulted by the term or useage of "Indio" and refer themselves exclusively as "Spanish". Calling Latinos that exploit US citizens: Native Americans is quite an abstract concept indeed. The colonials of the Americas saw to it that it is absolutely no source of pride or identification with: Native roots; while I personally pity that fact I don't see how that particular "outreach" has any bearing on the US and her citizens in regards to our sovereignty and our urgent need to protect the US border...even a little bit.

Posted by: crymeariver1 | April 28, 2010 12:27 AM | Report abuse

when a US citizen is asked by law enforcement they must provide a valid ID, if not they can be detained until their identity is authenticated. How is the AZ law racial? US Citizens do not care what country you come from illegally, illegal = deportation! do we have immigration quotas? Yes we do! Why do we have Quotas? If we agree to amnesty for a certain country then we will have to allow the quota for every other country to be increased by the same percentage! If we find it is easy to walk across a border rather then take a boat or a plane! then we will have to open our borders exponentially to all other countries. I know hundreds if not thousands of chinese, egyptian, mongolian, samoan, palestine, afgansitan, philippine, african that have waited years to legally have their family members to migrate to the USA legally. If you give Amnesty you must give equal Access to every other country that have paid fees and waited patiently to have family members allowed to enter the USA.
there is no racial profile, our Federal Government has failed to enforce the USA borders and allow illegals to cross.
come to think of it, why not allow the islams to come illegally and give them amnesty, you are not checking those incoming from our borders whom are you allowing to enter?

You know, I've been a rather liberal democrat my entire life, but lately I have found myself to be a bit more partial to Republican ways of thought. I now support AZ in passing this law. I mean look at what happened here in California. It was mainly because of the ultra-religious and prejudice latino population that caused prop 8 to be passed, which was a harsh act of descrimination on the gay community. So you know what, don't be such freaking hypocrites!!! I mean I love how these latinos living in Arizona somehow feel they are entitled to the freedoms of living in such a great country when they take advantage of them illegally. Give me a freaking break. They are such a walking contradiction it's anything but funny.

All I know is that for all those millions of illegal immigrants swarming into this country from Mexico because you can't handle your own country, please go back. I'm tired of the B.S. excuse that they do the jobs no one wants to do. Are you freaking kidding me??? Millions of American's would take these paying jobs, but of course lower-paying illegal immigrants end up getting the benefits that people living here legally deserve.

I'm all for rights of anyone who lives here legally no matter what race or religion you are, but this is ridiculous.

And for all you hispanics who keep saying things like, "we are going to control the United States one day soon. So be afraid." Get over your freaking self. Keep talking like that and you'll see exactly what type of racism and bigotry you will force the rest of the country to act on. It's you who will cause it, and there is a lot of you out there.

I feel like people compare this to being a Civil Rights situation like the way white people horribly treated African Americans in the 1960's and before. This is nothing like that. They were a part of this country where as you are not. I don't hate you, but I definitely don't support you.

Oh and I would just like to say to MX1-4EVER that you are pathetic. God this and God that, all I hear is blah blah blah. Your threats with God punishing everyone doesn't scare me the least bit. I'm an atheist and don't believe in that as it is. Your God that would punish me would probably be you with a Gun, and I bet he would have said that you were sent a message in a dream. That's usually how most religious freaks commit horrific acts. By using God as an excuse.

As a DC resident, I do not want the DC Council to issue a Resolution on AZ's law. Putting aside the issue of the underlying problem of illegal immigration, DC should just not be issuing resolutions on the laws in other states - especially as we ask Congress to stay out of our business. The idea of this Resolution is dumb.

With all the things that you listed on what undocumented immigrants get while in USA, all I can say is; WELCOME TO AMERICA..........................DUMBASS! It is different country than any other in this world and it doesn't belong to one particular race religion or nationality, yet your grandfather came here and took everything away from Native Indians, but Indians didn't make any laws or asked your grandaddy to leave. Your main problem is; YOU HATE IMMIGRANTS, LEGAL OR ILLEGAL, JUST GET THEM OUT OF THIS COUNTRY.

Juan Carlos Ruiz is nothing but a self-promoting idiot who doesn't care about anything or anyone. He wants to be in front of issues so that he can build a name for himself. He's such a phony in the Latino community here that he had to marry a white woman. Nothing wrong with this but he's the one always asking Latinos to keep their heritage strong in the City. He's a hypocrite and anything he supports, I question.
