Peaceoholics downsizing, forced to give up its headquarters space

Peaceoholics, the nonprofit as well known for its politics as working with at-risk youths, is severely downsizing after losing millions of dollars in earmarks. About 50 part-time and full-time workers have been laid off, and the group has until the end of the month to move out of its headquarters on Raleigh Place SE.

Co-founded by Ronald Moten, a friend of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), Peaceoholics received almost $8 million in city contracts in four years to help in its endeavors.

But last year, the D.C. Council grew wary of the group's involvement in the donation of a firetruck and ambulance to the Dominican Republic. The council also cut earmarks for all groups to help fill the budget gap.

The lack of funding has forced the group to squeeze into its administrative offices on the same street. Moten described it as a "one-floor house" where five employees can work comfortably. The group now has 22 employees, he said.

The headquarters, which costs $6,000 to $6,500 a month including utilities, can no longer be supported.

Moten said two things were to blame: "Vince Gray and his politics."

Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) announced last week that he will challenge Fenty in the Democratic September primary.

Moten also added council member Harry Thomas Jr. (D-Ward 5) to his blame list, for distributing money tagged for gang intervention to other groups "that don't do the work" through the Children's and Youth Investment Trust Corp.

Moten said Peaceoholics could have used the money to continue its commitment, later noting that two employees who were laid off were assigned to the community where a drive-by shooting resulted in four deaths.

Downsizing? To what?

It would be interesting to see how many agency directors are being asked to find money for Peaceaholics now that Ron Moten is no longer there. In 2007, many directors were told by the mayor to find money in their budgets to support this group. Council earmarks may not be available any longer but the mayor can still ask agencies to try and identify funding in their own budgets if he truly wants to help the group now.

I can only speak to what this organization did not do for the DC Dept. of Youth Rehabilitation Services and DCPS.

This side of short of nothing sums it up. Alliance for Concerned Men, Roving leaders, CeaseFire, and others have the track record and miles and do their part without the need for fanfare, lights, and camera time.

It is time for the end of Peaceaholics. I have heard from some DCPS parents that much of their work in schools was a joke.

The thing that destroyed any credibility for me was when Moten defended an ex-con for molesting a female student.

They are unprofessional and seem to thrive on publicity and the dollars flowing from Fenty.

You can say what you like about Peaceoholics. I worked for them for the first two years that they started the business...I MUST say that Ronald Moten actions are truly in the best interest of the youth...This man has done without for 6 months to a year to ensure the youth had what was needed taking home no pay...Is there some issues that still need to be address within the company? YES, however Ron Moten loves the youth....His anger and passion are more than genuine… I have worked with this guy and witness him not sleep for days running from one crime scene to youth homes and then to the courts. He may appear unorthodox but his actions are truly about the youth.

If Jahar had stopped spending all of the earmark funding going to South Africa to lay on the beaches as if he was rich then maybe they could pay their rent.If Jahar stopped leasing a new Benz every 6 months then maybe they could have paid their rent. If they did real work (cause they show up after each shooting as everybody else does) people wouldn't be so against them Ron Moten keeps namig Vince Gray...I guess he would since Moten is up and under fenty's a**! and what does Harry Thomas have to do with it...Fenty is mad at Thomas for exposing the fact that Fenty basically STOLE our tax dollars and gave it to his friends to pocket and share with him! Oh...1 more thing...Jahar has his fiance on the peaceoholic payroll...but SHE DOESN'T EVEN WORK THERE...Now investigate those politics, and you tell me fenty should still be re-elected...HELL NO!
