Orange adviser resigns over personal ties to rival Brown

Ann Marimow

Six weeks into his candidacy for council chairman, Vincent Orange has lost one of his top aides in a very public, personal departure.

Linda Greene, a former chief of staff to council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), signed on as Orange's spokeswoman last month. She stood with the candidate and other supporters when he signed his papers to challenge council member Kwame Brown in the contest to succeed Vincent Gray.

In a widely distributed e-mail message Monday, Greene wrote that she had resigned from the campaign because of her personal history with Brown.

"Something was holding me back from giving the campaign my all in all," she wrote.

That something became clear after a conversation with her ex-husband Duke Greene, she said, when he asked how she could campaign against Brown.

Greene said she has known Brown since he was a child through his friendship with her son, Brett.

"Kwame spent many nights and weekends at our home. His is part of my family," she wrote.

Greene wrote that she and Orange remain "good friends" and have "departed on great terms."

Greene was Orange's second-highest paid adviser, earning $4,500-a-month, according to campaign finance records.

Sean Metcalf, Orange's campaign manager, said he needed someone who could run the candidate's Web site and Facebook page and that he "did not find that in Linda Greene."

"We tried to move her somewhere else, but she couldn't find a good fit for the different needs we had," he said, adding that the campaign has no problem with her statement.

At least we now know who she thought would be better for the job.

Vote Vincent Orange for Chair of the City Council.

Orange? Really? He screwed up Ward 5, what makes you think I am going to vote him in to screw up the entire city? I wish Jack would take the chairmanship. No way would I ever vote for Orange. You want change, leadership and someone you can trust? Vote for anyone but Orange!!!!!!!!

Better use of $4,500 per month for a half hearted soul will be more useful in 21st century technology (website/facebook). Linda was too old school and never was into new technology, but she could talk a good game.
