Fenty prevails in Ward 2 straw poll, but will it be enough on Election Day?

Washington Post Editors

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty cruised to an easy victory in Wednesday night's Ward 2 Democratic straw poll, marking the first time in the campaign that the mayor has prevailed over Vincent C. Gray in local ward Democratic committee balloting.

According to officials with the D.C. Democratic Committee, Fenty drew 97 votes to Gray's 63. The balloting was open to any registered Democrat in Ward 2, which includes Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Downtown and Shaw.

Considering Ward 2 is widely expected to be Fenty country in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary, the Gray campaign likely will be more than pleased with it's 40 percent showing in the straw poll. In a classic game of setting expectations for reporters, Gray adviser Peter Rosenstein was telling reporters during the balloting that he expected Fenty to win by at least a 2-1 margin.

Although they are often not a good predictor of actual Election Day results, straw polls can be a good test of a campaign's field and get-out-the-vote operations.

On this front, the Fenty campaign appeared a bit more organized than the Gray campaign. When voters walked into the polling place at the Washington Plaza hotel on Thomas Circle, they were greeted by several Fenty volunteers who asked if they had been contacted by the campaign to attend. If they were, the Green Team checked their names off a computerized list of registered Ward 2 voters. For all that effort, however, the campaign only drew 97 people out of their apartments and houses to vote on a sticky Washington evening.

And if Fenty's operation can only muster 60 percent of the vote out of Ward 2 on Election Day, it could be an early night for the Green Team considering Gray's expected strength in communities in the eastern part of the city.

As my father use to say "Good night Irene".

PS--no reporting on the Ward 4 forum. Must not have been a good night for your Boy Fenty.

Not surprised at the Ward 2 Straw Pole victory because he kisses up to them. Not a good test of the will of the voters.

doesn't matter. Ward 2 is Boy Wonder's bailiwick.

@dccounselor72: I was there and although it wasn't an impressive forum in my opinion,(too many candidates, too little time for questions) it was very clear to Fenty himself that he's in trouble:)

I still say that Fenty's going to win. There aren't enough box lunches, malt liquor, fish sandwiches, and free stuff to get enough voters in Wards 5,7, and 8 to the Polls.

Fenty will win Wards 1,2,3, and probably 4.

6 may go to Gray, but not by a wide enough margin to make a difference. 4 will also probably go to Fenty because of his ties to his community and his close relationship with Muriel Bowser.

I am no Fenty fan, but given the alternatives, I'll be voting for him. So sad that DC can't manage to field any good Mayoral candidates. *SIGH*

As a Ward 4 resident I take issue with the analysis that Fenty will win ward 4. There is tremendous grassroots support for Gray in Ward 4.

I went to the forum, and Fenty spent a lot of that time looking pissed off. Fenty made a major mistake by describing Takoma as having empty lots and high crime four years ago. I have lived in Takoma for 25 years and it has always been well maintained. This area has gotten more gentrified as time has gone by, but it has always be a beautiful place.

Also, just a little nitpicky, but I can't stand the way that Fenty always refers to himself as "we", as if he relieves believes in that King Fenty stuff.

I don't know if you are black of white, but your statement "I still say that Fenty's going to win. There aren't enough box lunches, malt liquor, fish sandwiches, and free stuff to get enough voters in Wards 5,7, and 8 to the Polls." Who are you talking about?

My opinion: I think at this point he residents of DC are ready to vote. Most people that I talk to can't stand Fenty.

Fenty has lost a lot of support in Ward 4, and he lost mine while during his first term as council rep.

@BLKManCommonSense, careful your sheet is raising over that KKK head of yours. If you think that Ward 5, 7 and 8 don't come out to rally around their candidate when they see a need for change, then you are very misguided. Blacks are the ONLY race who have withstood, dogs, ropes, water, killings, being set on fire and hung to stand and VOTE. So before you try to minimalize the tenancity and commitment of the black vote remember KENNEDY, CARTER, CLINTON, and OBAMA and now GRAY!!!

Oh, and I am from Ward 6 and we are mobilized in MASS to get out the vote. But remember, when change is on the horizon, blacks will walk, runs, jog, crawl and sleep at the polling place to get their vote counter.

Oh, and Mr. Gray, nor his campaign are the ones buying votes, so if lunches are being bought, then send them to Mayor Fenty/Ronald Moten and company who ONLY bring young black males from Ward 7 and 8 to perceived black Wards but are missing in action in Wards 1, 2, and 3, where the white voters don't want to see that pimping and pandering up close and personal.

Ward 2 is the ONLY Straw Poll that Mr. Fenty is going to win...take that to the bank and deposit it!!!!!

After Fenty loses the primary, I hope that the City Council will appoint a criminal prosecutor to go after him. Fenty is a total crook and belongs in prison.

blkmancommonsense:

Rid yourself of silly notions about the voting habits of black folks and check out historical voting trends in DC. Review the vote totals per ward in the 2006 primary and you will see wards 4, 5 exceed the vote totals in ward 3 and ward 7 is nearly the same as ward 3. Wards 2 and 8 vote totals are about identical and will likely cancel each other out. Superimpose the Jan 2010 Washington Post Mayor poll over the 2006 primary returns, include a few new voters and it projects a comfortable win for Gray. Sorry but this race is "Gray's to lose" and has been for quite some time.

Old Man evans was conspicuously absent from the Ward 2 Staw Poll.

Old Man evans must have made the baby fenty commercial before he knew the extent the stench his support of baby fenty was going to linger and continue to discredit Old Man evans - the District's own Mr. Fiscal Conservative, Mr. Protector of the Public Purse, Mr. Maintainer of the District's Hallowed Bond Rating, Mr. "I Signed Off on Three baby fenty Budgets before i grew a pair and stopped supporting the downsizing of the District's One Billion Dollar Savings Account by Three Quarter's Value."

Old Man evans must have also forgotten that it was baby fenty and Phil Mendelson who opposed nearly every initiative, especially those related to Economic Development, that former Mayor Anthony Williams ever offered; earning baby fenty his initial support from the fawning Adams Morgan/Mt. Pleasant/Gold Coast crowd of bleeding-heart-liberals searching for our very own Barack Obama.

Old Man evans must have also forgotten that it was baby fenty who replaced all the Williams Administration Officials, who helped Former Mayor Williams turn this bankrupt City around, with Stepford-Wives-Like Robot Administrators under 'Big Daddy/Dick Cheney' nickles' toe.

Given the Number of Williams Administration supporters backing Chairman Gray, if one wanted to vote for the continuity of the Williams' Legacy, one should elect Vincent Gray Mayor of this Fine City.

Arrogant. Corrupt. Petty. Stubborn. Incompetent.

Fenty is DC's version of George Bush. Peter Nickles is his Dick Cheney.

I wish there was a way for WaPo to indicate folks with multiple handles and who happen to be paid Gray supporters. I am not a Fenty fan, but considering the alternative I will stick with him. There are a lot of voters who feel like I do (at least the ones I talk to). I can not vote for Gray simply because I dislike Fenty. The city works and Gray has no record to speak of... I will take the less sh!ty of the two.

Samiismoni14, I beg to differ. Gray supporters are not being paid to speak the truth. We feel so strongly about reversing our city's demise, which is occurring under Fenty, that we will support and vote for Gray for that reason alone. Gray offers an appealing alternative---someone who is (1) intelligent, (2) purposeful & deliberate, (3) independent, and caring. You know many of us DC residents do still want someone who exudes genuine warmth and concern for the people in our city. As long as we accept corruption, dishonesty, and immature as demonstrated by Fenty, our city will lose its standing among others in the nation. Yes, I am proud to be voting on election day (The Democratic Primary)---Sept 14th for Mr. Vincent Gray, someone who can restore respect to the Office of Mayor.
