Moten to speak to media, challenge Gray

D.C. Councilman Vincent C. Gray may be running against Adrian M. Fenty in the mayor's race, but it might seem Thursday as if Gray is running against Fenty-ally Ronald C. Moten, the co-founder of Peaceoholics.

Moten has alerted the media to a noon press conference he is holding outside of Pacifica Radio's WPFW studios in Adams Morgan so he can respond to Gray campaign for "slandering" him after it put out a press release last night accusing Moten of being one of Fenty's "cronies."

Moten also plans to confront Gray, who will be attending a debate with Fenty at the radio station from 11 a.m. to noon.

On Wednesday, D.C. Wire reported that Moten wants Fenty to veto a council bill approved Tuesday that would make it local crime to pay someone to vote or register to vote, or accepting payment to vote or register to vote. Moten worries the bill, which he said was sloppily drafted and rushed through the legislative process, could outlaw the Go-Go concerts he is organizing to drum up support for Fenty's campaign.

The Gray campaign seized on Moten's comments to D.C. Wire, issuing a statement Wednesday night stating it was "beyond disappointing that one of the mayor's top cronies would oppose a measure to stop vote-buying."

"But I'm not surprised," Gray spokesman Traci Hughes said. "The mayor and his cronies have had no problem bringing pay to play politics to city government. Now it looks like they want to bring it to the voting booth."

In an interview, Moten said he resents being called a crony.

"I work hard for my name," Moten said. "If he wants to talk about cronies, I am going to start naming all his cronies...He can't go along destroying innocent people....I have worked hard all of my life and never got anything for free."

Moten has emerged as an untraditional, yet influential, Fenty supporter in the mayor's race. Since Fenty took office, Peaceoholics has received millions of dollars in city money to operate its violence prevention programs. Moten, who no longer works for Peaceoholics but sits on its board of directors, is now trying to rally African-American support for the mayor.

Council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) said the "Corrupt Elections Practices Act" approved Tuesday was designed to respond to community concerns to guard against fraud as the city implements her proposal to allow for same-day voter registration and 10 days of early voting in this year's elections.

Update, 10:30 a.m.
Although Cheh said she is confident that the process will go smoothly, she said some community leaders expressed concern after allegations that Moten paid several teenagers and young adults to vote for Fenty in a Ward 8 mayoral straw poll in May.

Moten strongly denies the allegation. In an interview Thursday, Moten said he supports efforts to make it a local crime to pay people to vote.

"I think people should go to jail who pay people to vote," said Moten, an ex-offender.

But Moten said the bill should have had more assurances that the emergency legislation also won't hinder Fenty's concerts.

At the concerts, the Fenty campaign encourages participants to register to vote in exchange for entrance, free food and T-shirts featuring the mayor pictured with go-go artists.

Gray campaign strategist Mo Elleithee said, "Ron Moten is a lifelong buddy and top campaign advisor of the Mayor's, whose organization has gotten a number of questionable contracts from the city. Now he's attacking a bill to prohibit vote-buying. I'm pretty sure that neither he nor the Mayor ought to be teaching any classes on ethics."

I think that it's amazing that Moten is getting press. This former Drug Dealing Peaceoholic Pimp is nothing but a street thug that's needed by Fenty to get the votes of the underclass, whom Fenty has neglected.

In a article, Go-Go for Fenty, is a prime example of Fenty exploiting the underclass yet again. When he was running for election in '06, he made promises to the residence of Ward 7 & 8 which was never realized.

Now that his back is against the wall, he uses Moten, who is dumb as nails, to recapture the votes of the underclass.

Fenty is so arrogant to the point that he himself will not appeal to those in Ward 7 & 8 for their vote. He uses Moten, who was brought and paid for through Peacoholics.

I guess the media is focusing on this clown and not the real issues of the District of Columbia.

What should be examined is what did the residence of the District of Columbia get for the money paid to Peacoholics. The only benefit that I can see is that it perhaps keeps Moten from Drug Dealing.

I hope that when Vincent Grey is elected, he cancels the Peacoholics contract with the city, and if he does, I will bet my last dollar that Moten will be back to drug dealing.

Once a street thug, always a street thug.

Who's running here - Fenty or Moten - good grief... no one cares what Moten thinks!

I'd be curious to see if Fenty indeed vetoes this bill because of how one person feels (friend or not). Even if I considered voting for Fenty - Moten would be the reason i'd change my mind and quickly. Fenty should denounce him and his desperate need for attention.

I appreciate what Moten does with peaceaholics, but didnt he do a prison bid. You worked hard all your life. There was a time you took the easy road in order to get locked up. Living in ward 8 were you try and do alot of work, I'm disgusted at the fact your helping a man that never helped east of the river. And isn't that were your from and were gray lives. Unless your getting something out of it, I can't see your motivation. And if you are getting something, that makes you a cronie.

Do not be fooled !!! Ron Moten is an evil worthless crackhead who should never have been let out of prison. During the past 3 years his organization has received millions of taxpayer dollars for which it has not accounted. The City Council should hire an independent criminal investigator to audit Moten's / Peaceoholics books.

Be it Karl Rove or Moten, there is always a snake in the ear of a pol. And Gray had better do a better job of presenting WHY he should be Mayor as opposed to why Fenty shouldn't. We all know that tactic doesn't work too well in this town.

If you listened to the debate today..Gray didn't even try to do that. He just tried to say croney as many times as possible.

When it comes to substance...he wants to talk about talking bout doing something. But, only after everyone has talked about what we talked about talking about.

What a leader!

He has no message what so ever.

This bamma again...

So let me get this straight. Fenty & Moten believe that the people of DC who enjoy Go-Go will vote for him simply because they are provided a t-shirt, some food and a concert? Nevermind that while many areas of DC have gotten new pools, dog parks, development, many areas of DC (home to the constituents they are targeting) still look like they are stuck in the 80s and 90s. Millions went to Moten but they had to fire hundreds of teachers for budget reasons. There still isn't an adequate hospital on the south side of the city!!

Not wpfw I used to be an officail there for 7 years. There is no slander he is a buddy of Fenty. He is also a low life and I promise you when his funding stops he will turn on Fenty too. Its his nature.

Moten is a gift alright. To the citizens of Wards 5, 7, and 8. And, anyone that don't want thier kids shot in a drive by.

Any reasonable person..please read this non-sense.

"Ron Moten is an evil worthless crackhead who should never have been let out of prison. During the past 3 years his organization has received millions of taxpayer dollars for which it has not accounted. The City Council should hire an independent criminal investigator to audit Moten's / Peaceoholics books."

Evil worthless crackhead?

This man works with the most at-risk youths in our City. Kids that don't trust anyone but people that have been thru what they are going thru and will go thru. What does that person's statement say about the people that Moten advocates for?

Gray already cut the funding for PEACE-o-holics. And, he busy trying to write election laws 69 days before an election that he is running in. CRAZY!!!!!

And, Moten is the bad guy for pointing that out? Gray was writing amendents on the dais. CRAZY abuse of power. Incredible.

Moten is a gift for Gray alright. He did pull Fenty the Ward 8 straw poll. And he might registared over 6,000 people in Wards5, 7 and 8. with those go go concerts. His grass root contacts have exposed others shady deals. And, he is a real street dude. Politics happen in the streets.

He is causing Gray enough stress that he and Mary Cheh mention him by name. Harry Thomas mentions him by name. They respond to his criticism. If he was a joke, they wouldn't say a word.

They darn sure wouldn't be writing duplicative election laws specifically designed to take the enforcment of election laws out of the hands of the feds and putting it into their own. And again, 69 days before the start of the election they are competing in.

If that doesn't a breach spirit of the Hatch Act nothing does. The conflict of interest is the timeing and writing is monumental. Gray should never use the word integrity again.
He is a gift alright. Like a horse head in your bed.

Can you be real about ANYTHING here? Just ANYTHING. All of your posts are filled with platitudes to the mayor and current chancellor. Yet, in your same world of "political reality" you fail to grasp the essence of the term itself.

In what elections have the opponent NOT present himself as the ANTI-incumbent? You can take a look at mostly every contested election, around the country, and bear witness to that single fact. Obama won AGAINST bush while offering general ideas of what he would do in office.

Gray, has done the same thing. He has presented himself as the anti-fenty while offering general ideas what he would do in office. It is not a political reality that he, as you accuse, has no message whatever. It is a lie and you, in this sense, is a LIAR of the worst mold.

politicalrealist are you crazy?????
You must be. I can't speak for ALL the youth in wards 5 & 8 but I can darnwell tell you that ward 7 is covered.

YES the younguns take the free Tee and the free gogo... but they AINT voting for Fenty. And if I were Ron I would "request" ID from those that are filling out registration cards just to get in the gogo because word on the street is you can put any name you want on it just to get in for free. I would hate to have Fenty et al suffer another blow by turning in 6000 bogus registration forms. Oops too late huh? Lol

Trust this, all those kids Fenty/Ron et al are targeting have already been registered either through the Obama campaign or the teachers that were terminated LAST OCTOBER or the family member who was terminated when the day cares closed or the family member whos contract was cancelled or the.... you get my drift.

Bottom line is, Fenty/Ron et al should have been thinking about those kids/young adults and their family/home life when they made their contracting decision, or the school RHEEform decision, or when terminating their parents. Too late now. The cable, the phone and the air have all been cut off so yes they will take your money, but you cant go in the voting booth with them now can you?

Oh, and as for WPFW, I listened to the same show you did and I heard 2 callers, BOTH commentators, Grey AND KINLOW make comment that the Mayor STILL WASNT ANSWERING ANY QUESTIONS PUT TO HIM. Alexander even called in and REPEATED the question and yeah he used up his time talking... just not about the issue at hand. The people on the street are saying answer the question Fenty! Grey spent the whole interview responding to lies that Fenty was allowed to make since Jonetta is his buddy. Even knowing ALL that, that the interviewer was partial to his opponent and that his opponents butt boy, opps crony... oops, POLITICAL ADVISOR was going to confront him.... guess what Grey still did knowing all of that??????

Which is much more than you can say for your guy Fenty who "couldnt make it happen". Grey wouldn't hide, disappear, agree to do the interview and then cancel at the 11th hour. He showed up and gave all of you the chance to shoot your best shot and all you all could think to do was to act like the idiots that you are. Ranting and raving or shucking and jiving! You all need that contract money bad don't you? lol

As for Moten, compared to the other adjectives used to accurately describe him, crony is a compliment. In the world of most, cronies are not always thugs. Some cronies are educated, have communication skills and maintain viable employment. He should be careful of the adjectives that he rejects. For Moten, crony is a "BIG" step up.

This is Barry 101 tactics, manipulate the poor and uneducated as Barry has done for years now in Ward 8! just like grown azz adults in this town still talk about Barry giving them a summer job 30+ years ago, Fenty and Moten are banking on dumb azz kids voting for him over a free Backyard Band or some other band's show. AND PEOPLE TRY TO DEFEND THIS IGNORANT SHT!

Ronald Moten is a rabid animal who needs to be put down and Mayor Fenty thinks we should ALL be more like Ronald Moten.
This man is who I tell my son's NOT to emulate...this is the real Ronald Moten...A cocaine distribution charge sent him to prison in 1991.
Moten began robbing people and selling drugs at an early age and detracting from the positive DC landscape and since that time he has turned his street hustle into multi-million dollar non-profit hustle.
Mr. Moten has just changed the people that he robs; now he is robbing the residents of the District of Columbia through our federal and local taxes.

Watch as this animal pursues his prey.....

Ron Moten gives chase to VCG Today.

Mayor Fenty condones Moten's tactics and states more Washingtonian's should be like Ron Moten.

I am beginning to see Ron Moten as threatening. This guy's behavior is that of a gangster.

This mayoral race is getting bazaar daily. As a D.C. voter, Ron Moten's association with Mayor Fenty is a turn off.

Posted by: CaptainKangaroo | July 15, 2010 3:59 PM | Report abuse

Let's be real about this. Many of us grew up with or have a Moten or worse in our family. We know the background. We know the ignorance. We know trifling and how f'd up they can really be. Even as young adults we weren't savvy enough to truly understand the mentality, but as adults you understand the personality trait that allows one to be the 1991 Moten and the current day Moten. In truth, it's a thin line between the two.

Moten is still the same 1991 dude that has the mentality to force himself on you and take what he wants. he's a bully that takes advantage when he knows he has the upper hand or power behind him. He is a hustler, get over artist and survivor. and he still the guy that wants to be noticed.

There lies my confusion with Fenty and his campaign letting this guy be such a loose cannon. fenty's folks have to want this guy to keep a low profile. folks like Moten don't really change their stripes. and it's just not Moten, he has 75 or so working with him. one already got convicted for some sex crime with a young girl. i would not doubt if one of his 75 has youngins out there dealing for him too.

This follow and yell at Gray routine just shows how stupid and self absorbed Moten is. Fenty and moten are both ego tripping. Fenty thinks he is the man, but he has no control over Moten. Moten knows Fenty is a sucker and has the mentality that he can walk over Fenty. Trust me, Moten is telling Fenty what he wants and mayor fenty is essentially writing Moten checks via the DC budget. only a btch get played like that.

Motens act loyal and seem like they got your back when you the man actually feeding them. But Moten is a survivor. he'll figure out another hustle. Right now he sees Gray as a threat to his livelihood (meal ticket). he's showing what he thinks is his civilized side. Wait until this dude really feels cornered. We haven't seen nothing yet.

Am I crazy? Probably. Am I wrong? We will see.

Moten is ghetto, igornant and a lot of other not so good things. It is also embrassing. Please please get the word around about this video. The way Moten is chasing Vincent Gray is just scary.

Look I am one of the biggest critics of Moe, but I've known the guy since the early 90's and he's not a "crackhead". Moten used to beat the streets hard, but ever since he started the Peaceoholics he's let that take his mind off of what he used to do back in the days. Now in his mind he thinks that he's a "GOD".

I watched the videos and I am shocked and scared for Gray and anyone who dares speak out against Fenty and Moten.

Watching the video with Fenty defending Moten was sad. I did not think my opinion of Fenty could sink lower and I now know that I was wrong.

I thought the video of Moten following Gray was appalling until I watched the news conference with Moten putting a young man out front to defend him. As he pumps questions to the young man (questions he had written down), the young man tried to respond and you can tell he had practiced the answers and was trying to make sure he responded the way he had rehearsed them.

Fenty, please keep Ron close to you. The two of you are quite the couple.

Yes you worked hard for your name, from the street and prison. Bad reputations take a minute to build and a lifetime if at all to change.

"If he wants to talk about cronies" Again, consider that name out of all the other names a big step up.

"He can't go along destroying innocent people" No he shouldn't but he's talking about you. Where is the innocence?

"I have worked hard all my life and never got anything for free." You worked hard at wrong doing. Who benefited from that? You did get something for free, 3 hots and a cot and regrettably, the taxpayers paid for it. These wildman antics, loud, lewd, crude and rude suggest that we got nothing in return.

However, if all of this gets Fenty out of office, please continue. It's working.

The thing that really gets me is he is doing all of this while at the same time, he has refused to give the city council, the dc auditor, the mayor or anyone else who asked a proper accounting of what he has spent our 15 MILLION dollars on. And this fool wants us to take him seriously.

Backgroud on one of the members of that group was Warren Williams Jr. His daddy use to own club you which hosted go go's in the Reeves Building before they were shut down for a killing. Ok so Warren Jr. was a part of Bannerker ventures 0 one point remember them $86 million no bid cronie contract. Warren left the company and started his own. Don't worry he's still eating good off the Distruct govt citizens. He received part of the Northwest one contract on North cap st (next to Gonzaga). He also had issues w/ his office location. He used an abandoned building that his daddy owned on 7th street as the office address. I haven't checked lately but the only completed project was the Warrenton (sp) on milltary (sp) road right off of GA ave.

What name? Is Moten delusional? Does he actually think he has any political clout--or any kind of clout for that matter--in DC? This guy is way out of touch with reality and Fenty is too otherwise he'd rein him in and tell him to keep his mouth shut.

Fenty is spiraling downward as fast as he rose to the top and it is quite entertaining to watch. All Gray has to do is keep breathing til Sept. 14 the the mayor's position is his--thank goodness!

Crackhead? Isn't that a little far to the right? From what I have seen or read, he seems to be very credible in what he is stating on Gray's record! He is obviously not ghetto, or ignorant, if he were he would not be as successful as he is. He is a great organizer and he is passionate speaker, so that right there will draw many people to him. If you think only residents in Ward 8 are listening to him. Your wrong, across the lines in PG and DC, he gains attention for making sure those who are young and underserved are heard! I think it says alot when Gray will not even address you face to face, in front of the cameras. How is it that the Council who the people elect, can come up with laws like that during election season. While everyone is getting caught up in the press conference he did, alot of people are ignoring the elected council's abuse of power. We have to be more vocal when it comes to how politicians try to play with the power we give to them. Such as this "law" constructed to look as though it is about "not paying people to vote". This law is absolutely an abuse of power, to stop the momentum Fenty's campaign has garnered to get people out to vote. Those go go's everyone jokes about on here. Oh, it's been working and thus they do not want the voters to come out, so they used legal manuvering. Remember politicians work for us, whether you like Moten or not, every DC resident should be livid about this "law".
You can count out Fenty/Moten all you want, but they are determined and driven to do what others won't to get out and reach people wherever they can. And it's working!
