Drinks, bars and go-go in the D.C. campaign

Anne Bartlett

It will be a day of partying Saturday on the D.C. campaign trail.

D.C. Council member Kwame Brown (D-At large), a candidate for council chairman, plans to hit 10 gay bars in six hours Saturday night in a bar crawl sponsored by the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club.

Brown, who participated in a similar tour during his 2008 race for council, will stop at bars in Dupont Circle, Capitol Hill, Southwest and Southeast from 9 p.m. until closing time. Brown is even scheduled to stop at a male strip club, Ziegfeld's/Secrets on Half St. SW.

(Update 8:30 p.m - Jeffrey D.Richardson, president of the Gertrude Stein Club, called D.C. Wire to clarify Brown will not be attending Secrets nigthclub. Richardson said "an intern mistakenly included Secrets" on Brown's schedule.)

In June, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club endorsed Brown in his bid against former council member Vincent Orange.

While Brown tries to woo gay men and lesbians, Council chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) will be battling over the go-go vote in the mayoral race.

In effort to match Fenty's recent push to win over fans of the District's home-grown genre, the Gray campaign is holding a four-hour "community rally" Saturday afternoon at Oxun Run Park in Southeast. The event will feature "food, music" and "voter-registration on site," according to a flier advertising the event.

Fenty, meanwhile, plans to hit three different go-go events Saturday, according to Fenty strategist Ronald Moten, who used to work as a go-go promoter. The Fenty campaign will host an event in the Saratoga neighborhood in Northeast. The mayor also plans to hit community events featuring go-go bands at Emery Recreation Center and Barry Farms, Moten said.

Tim and Niki,

Food and music doesn't mean go-go and shrimps. As written, you're making it appear Vince Gray is delving into the go-go scene a la Mayor Fenty (an attempt to draw similarities between the candidates. Could it be Fenty lost some white voters b/c of his association with go-go???? Nice try) Please stop your attempts of painting a picture of Vince Gray that isn't accurate. Fenty wants to be the go-go candidate. This column is inaccurate.

@DadofTwins Nikita and Tim wrote the article that way because the Gray promo flyer promotes his "ward 8 community day" will feature "go-go's masters" namely TCB TOB, Black Alley w/Phil Ade.

LooseLips has posted a story regarding Fenty trying to find money to pay Ron MoTEN $400,000 for work PERFORMED.

Correction to this posting. The Gertrude Stein Democratic Club Bar Crawl with Kwame Brown will not include a stop by a male strip club, Secrets. The Councilmember and Gertrude Stein will be visiting Ziegfeld's not Secrets. Get the full schedule at or follow us on twitter at @steindemocrats. Since the post's metro desk has decided not to really cover what happens in the District, make a quick jump over to the City Paper to learn more about the following:

Mayor Adrian Fenty’s administration is trying, quietly, to find some $400,000 to pay Ron Moten.

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray accused Mayor Adrian Fenty’s fraternity brothers Omar Karim and Sinclair Skinner, of “stonewalling” that investigation for political reasons.

If the post wont tell their readers all that is going on. I will!

SW has no gay bars, if you are speaking of Waterfront SW, unless Zanzibar and Hogates have turned gay since this article was written. Kwame Brown is just trying to swindle the gay community. For those of you out there who are gay, do not fall for this. And memo to Gray and Fenty, the go-go community is the underlying problem in DC that wreaks ignorant violence, and that community is the last place you guys need to campaign. They will only leach off of your presence and handouts, and obviously they won’t be there on Election Day to vote. Save your money for the good citizens in DC.

Ron Moten is working so hard to get Fenty re-elected because he knows that's the only way he will ever see that $400,000.
Fenty is Moten private AMT. Moten has already gotten millions of taxpayers' dollars. It is not right to see our taxes go to that loud mouth thug and no one will tell the citizens how that money is spent. Fenty is a fool and Moten is a clown!

Anyone catering or pandering to the Go-Go crowd is a moron. These people don't vote. These are the same goons shooting, stabbing, raping, and assaulting those across the DMV.

Ron Moten Campaign Strategist unreal. This revelation should be enough to show everyone that Mr. Fenty needs to go. I agree with the comments that the reason Mr. Moten is working so hard is he wants to make sure he gets his $400,000. We can only hope whether it be the DC "Go-Go" community or any other District resident they see through the strategist as a tell tail sign of the integrity of the "candidate" Good luck DC citizens many are praying for your City!

Some of you are really bitter and biased people. Kwame is doing what every politician should be doing. If he were visiting 'straight' bars/gogo places, would there have been any WP coverage? I do not think so. Gay community has been supporting politicians for the longest time. Quid-Pro-Quo is only inevitable. These places bring revenue to DC Gov just like any other places (if not more). Do your thing, Kwame. By the way....why was the visit to Zigfields/Secrets club struck out in the Post? He would have enjoyed multidisciplinary entrainment of the club. Kwame-try the second floor first.
