Graham says poll shows him with commanding lead

Washington Post Editors

D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) reports he has a commanding lead in his bid for reelection, according to a poll conducted by his campaign last week and released to the media Tuesday.

But Graham is holding back one key of piece information from his survey -- which candidate for mayor has the edge in Ward 1?

The poll, conducted by Lake Research Partners, found Graham with 70 percent of the vote against his two challengers in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary, Bryan Weaver and Jeff Smith.

The poll, which should be viewed with some skepticism since it was conducted by his campaign, also found that 82 percent of Ward 1 Democrats view Graham favorably.
The survey closely tracks with another poll Graham conducted in early July that showed him drawing 68 percent of the vote against Weaver and Smith.

For that poll, Graham also released his findings on how Ward 1 voters viewed the mayor's race. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty led Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray 43 percent to 37 percent in that survey.

Graham, who had been expected to support Fenty but now says he is neutral, is refusing to release his findings in the mayor's race in his latest survey.

Most observers believe Fenty needs to have a comfortable lead in Ward 1 to prevail citywide because Gray is expected to rack up big margins in wards in the eastern end of the city.

Graham has done a great job and has been good for Ward 1, he should be voted in for four more.
