A majority of the D.C. Council threw their full support behind Saturday's "One Nation Working Together, D.C." march on the Mall, widely viewed as an effort to rally Democratic-leaning voters ahead of the November midterm elections.

Gray wants hiring, promotion freeze

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray said Wednesday he wants Mayor Adrian M. Fenty to call for an immediate freeze on hiring and promotions to begin the process of closing a $175 million shortfall.

Gray: It feels like country is in a 'depression'

Responding to news the District is facing a budget shortfall of $175 million, presumptive mayor-elect Vincent C. Gray (D) said it feels like the nation is in a "depression."

Judge sanctions District in child welfare case

The federal judge overseeing the long-running class-action suit against the District's child welfare system sanctioned the District on Tuesday for disregarding court orders in the case.

Gandhi delivers grim news: Another $175 million shortfall

Sales tax revenue in the District has fallen dramatically, helping to contribute to more bad budget news for D.C. government, Chief Financial Officer Natwar M. Gandhi told officials Monday morning.
