Fenty write-in campaigns begin

Tim Craig

In the first of what are expected to be several similar efforts in the coming weeks, a "Run, Fenty, Run" page has appeared on Facebook urging voters to write in Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's name on their ballots in the Nov. 2 general election.

The page, which appears to have been created the three days after Fenty lost the Democratic nomination to D.C. Council Vincent C. Gray last week, already has 2,106 followers.

"We are citizens of Washington, DC who like the job Adrian Fenty has done as mayor, and who want to vote for him in November," the page states. "We are considering a write-in campaign -- if there is enough support. If you think Fenty is a good mayor, and if you would consider writing in his name in November, please click "like" on this page, and get others to do the same."

In recent days, Fenty has all but ruled out mounting a write-in a campaign. Last week, he declined the GOP nomination for mayor after more than 800 Republicans wrote his name on their primary ballot. Fenty also enthusiastically endorsed Gray at a D.C. Democratic State Committee unity breakfast on Thursday.

But unofficial Fenty write-in campaigns are expected to persist through the general election.

Paul Craney, executive director of the D.C. Republican Committee, said he expects that many Republicans will once again write in Fenty's name on their general election ballot because the party is not fielding a candidate.

"I think there is an undercurrent of disasstifciation with Vincent Gray and, to be honest with you, what happened in the primary was organic and I don't see that stopping in the next six weeks," Craney said. "If Vince Gray spends more time talking about firing (Schools Chancellor) Michelle Rhee and (Police Chief) Cathy Lanier, that is only going to be like putting gasoline on a fire."

Ronald Moten, a Fenty friend and strategist, said he's also heard talk of Fenty supporters mounting unofficial write-in campaigns.

"I've heard a lot of people say they are not voting for Gray," Moten said. "That is what I am hearing on the streets, so anything is possible."

Moten, one of Fenty's chief boosters during the campaign, added he won't be supporting Gray in the general because he thinks he ran "a crooked campaign."

"As all of this stuff comes out and people feel like they got cheated, who knows what will happen with a write-in," Moten said.

Sean Madigan, a Fenty spokesman, was not immediately available for comment.

I'm not voting for Gray, but I'm also keeping my perfect record of not voting for Fenty. I never liked Fenty and hate him now, but that does not translate to liking Gray enough to vote for him. Please move on and find someone new to run a write-in campaign.

Moten said: Moten, one of Fenty's chief boosters during the campaign, added he won't be supporting Gray in the general because he thinks he ran "a crooked campaign."

Moten: Gray does not want your support and does not need it. Any way, who are you? Start trying getting a job now.

So much for all the Fenty losers.

I don't care for Fenty and I didn't vote for him in the primary. However, I think he's learned something--how to lose with grace and class. I was impressed that he turned down the GOP nomination and that he announced his support for Gray.

His supporters should do the same. Fenty lost. Get over it and move on. Maybe in four years Fenty will re-emerge as a potential candidate sans Moten and greedy frat brothers I hope.

Why is it a lot of people think Fenty, Lanier, Rhee and Nickles are the only people who can govern DC? If anyone's paying attention, a lot of what Rhee has done has been nothing but hype. Test scores are DOWN, the achievement gap has INCREASED and now we're finally seeing studies which show her "reforms" aren't working. Vanderbilt just published a very thorough and scientific study which shows that merit pay does NOT lead to higher test scores.

The new wave of education reform and NCLB are about ready to come crashing down. Maybe then we'll begin to hold those accountable who are responsible for the problem: students and their parents.

DCMoney1 - please show me the Gray quote in which he says who he is thinking of bringing back for "Schools." I don't think you'll be able to produce one. I think you are speaking from your fears.

this is pretty common, but not very sophisticated.

All I've heard Gray say, relentlessly, when asked, is that he plans to sit down with Rhee to discuss the future.

Agree. 100%. I can not believe these people are Democrats. The online comments, lack of civility and completely cluelesses about this city are kinda of sad, actually.

Progress began before Fenty and will continue without him. The write-in campaign is just more divisiveness this place does not need.

What annoys me is that schools improved BEFORE fenty. Crime was going down before Fenty. Development happened before Fenty.

The same people you all are disrespecting have been here supporting progress all along. So get over it. Gray's qualified. He's going to be fine.

During the primary there were independants and Republicans who "wrote in" Gray for Mayor. I personally know Republicans who HATE Fenty. So no one should be too quick to believe that all independants and all republicans will "write-in" Fenty. The Washington Post and other media have done a good job of creating racial tension and idealogical unrest in this election. I think Fenty supporters are WRONG in their support for him, but I will defend to the death their right to vote for him.

Adrian Fenty and Michelle Rhee’s
ongoing CORRUPT connection with thugster-
henchman-wannabe impresario Ron Moten
and
millions of dollars of no-bid city contracts,
including with DCPS schools !

=> Can we perhaps get the City Council to do an investigation behind exactly what goes on with Ron Moten and his Peaceoholics organization in DC Public Schools ???

Several, and I mean several, of Moten’s Peaceoholics ADULT employees have engaged in sex with female DC Public School students as young as 14 years old, some of these teenage girls have children with these men as well. Much of Moten’s staff consists of convicted felons: rapists, drug dealers and murderers. When allegations are brought to the attention of school principals or MPD, the Fenty admin make them disappear…and in return DC government continues to feed the Peaceoholics piggy bank.

Concerned Citizen writes:
"Mr. Harrison who is an employee of he Peaceoholics sexually assaulted a female student at Spingarn High School. I am not going to say alleged because he has been arrested. He also allegedly proposed at least six other young ladies.
This is not the end.
Mr. Harrison, is an ex-con who spent 22 years in prison for MURDER. Yea MURDER! This is what Mayor Fenty and Michelle Rhee allows in our schools.
No effective or sufficient background check done per the policy of DCPS.
The Peaceoholics have free run of the school. They were dismissed from the school the same day of the assault.
Similar allegations have been made at other schools.
Why does the district continue to allow the Peaceoholics to assault our students?"
This story can be verified by legal documents, court records, and prior news reports.

All you god damn transplants learn a litte about DC before you arrived 3 years ago!!!!

The mayor before Fenty was Anthony Williams. Williams was the CFO hired by Bary under the Control Board years. he was beloved by the control board and the power establishement. He later became mayor and is often credited with the financial recovery of DC. he was viewed as the antithesis of Marion Barry. many blacks, including myself thought of him as an OREO. I think more republicans in DC threw fund raisers for him than anyone. But inretrospect I have to give some credit where it is due.

Virtually all the credit Fenty gets is attributable to the William's adminstration. the plans and financing for the schools and recs capital plans and more. All these condo's were not planned and constructed in the past 3.5 years. Crime reduction nationally started under Chief Ramsey, who was also far from loved in parts of SE. Williams wanted to take control of DCPS and your boy Fenty blocked it while on the council. Williams was a much better manager than Fenty. Williams just decided his last term he was going to travel the globe versus manage DC.

Robert Bobb was William's Chief Adminstative Officer. Bobb is from Oakland and other parts unknown probably. He isn't a Barry era protege'. There were several surprising names in the Gray campaign that were Williams Administration people including Susan Peck (whom I am not a fan). Again, Gray associating with key williams folks speaks volumes to me.

Now we know why wards 7 and 8 voted overwhelming 82%) against Mayor Fenty, a real Repulican with the backing of the Repulican party. Nice job Fenty trying to discise yourself as a Democrat. Fenty truly ruled like a Repulican also, big business, tone deaf to the poor, blacks, gays, hispanic, and working women.

Hello folks...
DO YOUR HOMEWORK to research the current & historic facts about Mayor Fenty's corrupt administration, sleazy shenanigans & questionable affiliations over the years! You need to research the profligacy with Fenty's taxpayer-paid parties, shady deals & overpriced city contracts with his fraternity brothers & his cronies. You need to research the closing of childcare facilities & the shuttering of children's playgrounds in predominantly black neighborhoods, the drastic reductions in mental health services, and the delay in implementing an "inclusionary housing" development policy. You also need to research the impolitic ousting & replacement of african-american professionals from city government leadership & managerial positions. Read the following excerpt: "But Fenty's standing among Democratic Party activists began to unravel, particularly after the summer of 2009, when the administration clumsily tried to evict a group headed by former first lady Cora Masters Barry from the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center in Southeast, which she founded. When Height and poet Maya Angelou tried to see Fenty to seek reconsideration of the eviction, the mayor cancelled scheduled meetings, outraging many African-Americans, who saw the dispute as confirmation of long-simmering concerns that Fenty took them for granted." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/14/AR2010091407069_3.html ----- Also, are you not aware of the ongoing financial improprieties, corrupt antics & thuggery of Fenty henchman Ron Moten ?!
I just watched a video produced by former DC daycare workers and there's a clip included from Ron Moten's press conference for a radio hip-hopster.
Please watch it and pay close attention to how the Mayor of the Nation's Capital is standing behind Moten (ex crack dealer) with his head bowed and in a submissive, scared stance. Something is suspect with their relationship!
I don't know what's up with those two, but it will make national headlines if it's every exposed !!!

Fenty isn't half the Mayor Anthony Williams was. Williams was deliberate, open and transparent. Fenty is knee jerk, closed and opaque.

Williams was written in because he was denied the privilege to be NAMED on the primary ballot. He did not run in the general election after LOOSING the primary election.

Again, Fenty ceded the election with some class. His supporters, who are dependent on having superiority over versus consensus with others are those who are embittered to delusion.

I think the DC Dept of Mental Health needs to provide some emergency support for Fenty voters. Seriously, they are sounding delusional and irrational.

Folks are talking about selling their homes and moving away. Ok. Fine. But it's crazy. The City hasn't changed. Gray has little in common with Barry (except the obvious).

Progress is not centered on Fenty. Google the name Anthony Williams. He did the heavy lifting. He's the true deal maker.

I feel you all's pain (no, not really) but the drama over this election is too much.

I'm so tired of Gray and friends getting away with murder. Gray has divided our city telling them all Mayor Fenty has done is build dog parks for white people on the other side of the river. I want all you scandalous people waitting for Gray to deliver on promises that you know he can't deliver to keep waitting. Also all those who are waitting on jobs like the fake canidate S.Brown who Vince Gray partnered with at straw polls even though he knew he was not a D.C. resident. All off you who brush of the fact that Gray has broken more laws and has more cronnies as he has teeth cant hide the truth forever. He is not the mayor yet and has two bodyguards sitting outside his door! I wonder why?. One of his croonies has already started the madness before he is even sworn in by by trying to relieve his client from paying the city a million dollars in taxes. Then Gray and his partner in crime Harry Thomas try to discredit the mayor and hard working people who tell the truth. Well everybody from the oldschool know's Gray had a problem with beating woman.GO PULL THE DOMESTIC REPORTS FROM MPD FROM HIS RESIDENTS OR DID HE MAKE THEM DISAPEAR LIKE HE MADE SOMEBODY CLOSE TO HIM DRUNK DRIVING OFFENCES DISAPEAR.LETS NOT TALK ABOUT HARRY THOMAS BECAUSE MY GIRLFRIEND IS ABOUT TO GO PUBLIC ABOUT THE BABY SHE HAS WITH HIM AND THERE IS ANOTHER ONE OUT THERE.THE SAD THING HE IS ALWAYS POINTING HIS FINGERS AT PEOPLE WHEN HE HAS HAD TWO CHILDREN SINCE HE HAS BEEN MARRIED.I dont like Fenty like that but at least he takes a stand and does not mislead folks like GRAY AND THOMAS THE TWO BIGGEST CROOKS AND HYPROCRITES TO WALK INTO THE WILSON BUILDING.STAY TUNED!!!!!!!!BABY MAMMA DRAMMA COMMING SOON!!!!!

LOL. The deck of cards have fallen. Fenty has lost and conceded. It is his "superiority minded" supporters who are finding it difficult to absorb that the days of placing one constituency over another are over. Fair and balanced, transparent government will be restored to levels even above where they were in the Williams Administration.

To underscore how dangerous the Fenty Administration really is, Neil Albert, the District's city administrator, is now HIRING Fenty cronies from Banneker Ventures and Liberty Engineer (companies owned by Omar Karim and Sinclair Skinner), as executive service employees (to avoid having to go through the competitive hiring process of D.C. Human Resources) and embedding them in various District agencies to ensure that they will have a job come January. We are facing a 100 million dollar budget deficit in FY2011 and Fenty is adding 100k+ cronies to the District payroll during a hiring freeze. Worse he is creating jobs where jobs don't exist (i.e. Paying people to do nothing).

I have never seen so many whites ignore such blatant corruption in my many years in the District of Columbia.

A write in campaign...come on. Comparing this effort to Mayor Williams' write in campaign is misguided at best. Mayor Williams had a ton of money and did a write in campaign during the primary. He was organized, no viable opponent, and had the funds to back it and wanted to do it. Here, Fenty is out of funds, he doesnt support the campaign, this is the general election, and Fenty has a viable opponent.

I would not write in Fenty. Fenty is now backing Gray and is attempting to unify the city behind Gray. All the nonsense on here is only serving to further tear the city apart.

Hilarity!

You might as well write in Donald Duck, because even if there was a chance in hell that you'd "elect" him, write-ins only work if the candidate is actually running for office. You might have forgotten about that little detail of Williams' write-in campaign: he was running.

What a silly waste of newspaper column inches. Guess blogs can say anything. But usually Tim Craig writes about something worthwhile and this sure isn't. Half the people on the Fenty write in list don't even live in the District and most I am sure didn't bother to vote last time even if they could have.
