Gray won't debate fans of Fenty write-in

Washington Post Editors

Don't count on a debate between Democratic mayoral nominee Vincent C. Gray and the write-in campaign for Mayor Adrian M. Fenty.

The candidate-less effort is pushing onward with Josh Lopez, a former ward campaign coordinator for Fenty, challenging Gray to debate the campaign.

"Who am I debating? The Web site?" Gray asked.

The write-in campaign, led by die-hard Fenty supporters and a self-proclaimed buzz, is trying to capitalize on voters upset by the resignation of Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee before the Nov. 2 general election.

Gray said he has asked Fenty to be more definitive in his lack of support for the write-in effort but said the mayor "considers himself having done that."

What is Mr Gray afraid of?

Why not debate the write-in.. its more than a website, if press conferences have been held, and press attended.

Why should he debate them? Wish these people will give it a rest. I wouldn't even waste my time. I'm bored already.

Posted by: missboo | October 14, 2010 4:06 PM | Report abuse

This is like die-hard Hillary Clinton supporters who refused to support Barrack Obama after he won the democratic nomination.

It would be a disservice to the democratic party of the District of Columbia for Gray to even CONSIDER such a ludicris proposition.

They don't have a candidate to debate. A nominee does not debate "organizers".

Posted by: concernedaboutdc | October 14, 2010 4:34 PM | Report abuse

Well if you're so bored, why are you leaving a comment on here? I think Gray should debate them. For a person who advocates no taxation without representation, it's absurd to act like he's already won the election when the whole city didn't get a chance to decide yet. The democrates want to impose their candidate on the whole city. He still has to earn my vote. I'm a taxpayer, I want to be represented. Debate them! I'm a voter and I want to see it!

Posted by: don36 | October 14, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Gray knows very well that he hasn't won the election yet.

That's why he's acting like a candidate by doing town meetings and urging people to vote in November.

Posted by: efavorite | October 14, 2010 5:44 PM | Report abuse

He's scared. He knows that if the entire city of D.C. got to vote in the primary he would've gotten wiped out. I'm a Republican and I've writing in Fenty. This election is not over! Gray is running scared.

You die-hard Fenty/Rhee supporters are pathetic. The city HAS spoken and your candidate LOST! Get over it! Find a new cause. Volunteer at a school in one of the poor areas of the city and let's see if your view changes any. I'm betting it will--BIG TIME!

BTW, Gray does not have anything to be scared of. He's a dignified, intelligent, classy statesman who wants to unify this city by utilizing a collaborative, consensual approach in running the city, unlike that wretched woman that just resigned and her arrogant benefactor (Fenty).

This is madness on the part of King Fenty supporters. Josh Lopez is a troll. This kid needs to go sit down in a corner, before he get's a beat down by some eldery black D.C. voter. Josh Lopez had no regards for senior citizens and he's been very disrespectful to them.

fred77004, Republicans are useless in this city. Republicans don't care about blacks and I can't imagine a black Democrat would vote for a party switching Republican like Fenty.

Most Republicans are racist rich white males like Jesse Helms. Fred77004 is another Jesse Helms. The D.C. Republicans must be desparate to draft a liberal left wing progessive like King Fenty.

The Democratic Party of the District of Columbia has nominated it's candidate for Mayor, Vincent Gray. No other party has presented a candidate for Mayor. That is their prerogative. Adrian Fenty, a Democrat, has endorsed the Democratic candidate of the District of Columbia.

If you are not a candidate nominated by a party OR a candidate pushing a write-in campaign, then there is nobody to debate.

The democratic nominee, the democratic party, is well above debating a "website".

Gray is not afraid by having town hall's, he is doing what he said he would do. TRY and bring the city together. RESPECT everyone's perspective. Make himself available for citizen questions.

I have mistakenly called these kooks disgruntled Hillary supporters, they are more like the Palin klan. (with a k)

Dear concernedabout dc.. and Ward4DC, et al;

It was my impression that the Town halls were for Fenty supporters to listen and hear what was being said by His Self to be Mayor (marion Barry) Gray.

Then why were the Fenty supporters, and campaigners stopped at the door????
Please review the 2 police reports that were filed for evidence.

If he is afraid of the questions from the Fenty supporters/campaigners, then he is also afraid of a debate, whether it be a write-in, or Republican "requested" write in.

You are the same people that are now upset that Rhee is leaving before the end of the term.. Yet for months on end during the campaign you wanted to write her ticket out of town before the primary.

You are disillusioned, and malicious.

Posted by: pdv1 | October 14, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

@pvd1, there are plenty of Fenty supporters that have not only been let in the door but are given great latitude in asking questions in an aggressive yet civil manner. However, if the clear intent has been to just disrupt the venue and prohibit those who are truly there for information to get it, then, yes, those individuals are escorted to the door.

Folks like Josh Lopez the Ward 4 coordinator for Mayor Adrian Fenty’s failed re-election campaign who is SELF described as a “volunteer leader” on the RunFentyRun Facebook page that was at Vince Gray’s Ward 5 town hall meeting engaging in less-than-friendly banter with Gray’s folks.

The same Lopez who achieved a small measure of infamous notoriety during the campaign when he tried to disrupt a Gray news conference with a bullhorn.

The same Josh Lopez who took a program analyst position at the deputy mayor’s office of planning and development on Sept. 27 AFTER the primary, just days before the imposed hiring freeze. Whose predecessor who had stopped volunteering on the Fenty campaign for health reasons, was fired three days after the election.

It is true, that the majority of those on this write in campaign are CURRENT government employees trying desperately to hold on to high salary jobs that they are woefully unqualified to keep. Gray's folks know who these people are and their fate is certainly sealed by this silly campaign.

Posted by: concernedaboutdc | October 14, 2010 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Well said concernedaboutdc. Pvd1, please put the crack pipe or Vodka bottle down and seek some professional help. Josh Lopez is a troll bully and he needs to stop this childish behavior and grow up and leave politics alone.

Posted by: Ward4DC | October 15, 2010 3:00 AM | Report abuse

Again, how ill informed you are.
1. there are over 180 volunteers, josh lopez is not the only one. please witness the morning visability at the metro stops
2. I do not drink nor use drugs, and your slandering is very abusive, as well as your name calling of Josh Lopez.
3. Josh was not the one that filed a police report at the Ward 5 town hall.
So, before you slander, and write totally ignorant remarks, please try finding out the truth.

So, Mr. Gray Jr. ... what are you afraid of? Your Dad couldn't handle a debate that doesn't include the same rhetoric that he has been spouting for the last 4 months.

Thanks Carlos for all your comments above.

Gray ran a hate Fenty campaign and divided the city between black and white, jobless and employed at the same time Gray was for one city saying he was a uniter after he CREATED the divide. Gray lied to the public and has yet to say what he will do if elected. What are his top 4 initiatives? What policies of Fenty's will he change? No one knows as Gray has given broad statements like, improve DC schools, create jobs, (a mayor does not create jobs unless he hires the unemployed onto the DC payroll) without any specifics Gray is still lying. Write Fenty in is a vote for the only Mayor who has improved the city in all aspects and clearly said he will continue his work. I support Write Fenty In.

You Fenty write-ins are crazy! Do you think if Fenty has a chance with this write in campaign Rhee would leave? If you and Fenty feel this could work and she still left. What does this say about her? I am really tired of this. What message do we send to our children. The people voted but we don't like the outcome so try another way to get what we want. We don't get everything we want!! You sound like the Tea Party to me>

PDV1, why can't you and others accept the fact Mr. Fenty lost. I don't think no one has slantered anyone. ABC7 NEWS reported and showed Josh Lopez blowing a bullhorn in Gray supporters faces being confrontational. Are you Muriel Bowser or Adrian Fenty writing this cramp?

Who the heck is Carlos by the way?

Concernedaboutdc, you are always on point with your comment. Vincent Gray will be the next mayor and PDV1 should let it go.

There is nothing slanderous about the truth. Josh Lopez has made the bed that he currently lies in. Everything I said above is 100% accurate and 100% provable with just a little research.

I attended the Ward 5 town hall and witnessed the antics of Josh Lopez personally. He appeared a bit, touched, and I don't mean by an angel. It WAS Josh Lopez that called the Metropolitan Police Department after being escorted out for his outrageous behavior.

He even demanded the police to arrest "someone" for assault. An assault that none of the hundreds in attendance witnessed. I tell you, the man's elevator just doesn't go all the way to the top floor.

He has bigger fish to fry than working ANYONE's campaign. But it is right up his alley to work a campaign without a candidate.

He is, in essence, Sarah Palin, without a true following.

PDV1 aka Josh, my wife and I will be attending Howard’s Homecoming on October 30th. Afterwards, we both will be on the main yard watching our brothers and sisters do their thing. Please feel free to come see how we celebrate Homecoming at a HBCU school. I am a proud Howard University graduate and I’ve tried to attend Homecoming every year since graduating in 1977. I can’t say this about King Fenty. I haven’t once seen Adrian Fenty at a Howard’s Homecoming. As an alumnus of Howard, what has King Fenty given back to his Alma Mater, Howard University? I wonder how much he’s done for the mostly predominately white Oberlin College.

If Independents and Republicans want their voices heard in a general election, then they should recruit CREDIBLE repug or indie candidates who can potentially win a city wide election. It's not THAT difficult. See, e.g., Carol Schwarzt (who I voted for for mayor against Marion Barry back in the 90's), Dave Catania and Michael Brown. Even Statehood candidates have won elections in this city.

Fenty is a DEMOCRAT who LOST the DEMOCRATIC primary. That's how it works. Even if by some fluke he wins a write-in election under these bizarre circumstances, he would have NO POLITICAL CAPITAL in which to govern. Fenty has clearly moved on. You should do the same and spend your time politically organizing with independent and repug. candidates instead of complaining.

Ron Moten must have passed the torch to you (Tim Craig, we know this is you) as Fenty's unofficial campaign strategist! Every since Fenty's cronies announced their write-in campaign you haven't missed a beat or a day to give them free publicity on DC Wire.

Tim, if the "Hee Haw" couldn't get him reelected, do you honestly believe a write-in campaign will.

I am amazed at the Gray supporters, what are they afraid of?(4) wards have spoken and now they want to speak for all 8 wards. I am amazed at the delight of Rhee leaving when the school system was at a 3rd world country status 4 yrs ago. Janey was fired as ineffective and now all of a sudden he was effective. Our democracy is amazing when the ignorant and the stupid and speak for the whole community. Everyone should exercise their constitution right to the fullest. If not the ignorant will always be in control. Gray's campaign was built on hate and hate only.

I've noticed the racist, name calling comments are from Fenty's Write-In, hate-mongers. If Gray's supporters are so ignorant and you guys are the intelligentsia, why was Fenty defeated by Gray?

c10655, remember this: people around the world are analyzing Fenty’s historic,$5 mil reelection disaster to learn what NOT TO DO in campaign. They will NOT correlate an intelligent, well executed campaign with Fenty, but an amateurish and ignorant one that had the Mayor of the Nation’s Capital dancing the “HEE HAW” and passing out beer and pizza in weed laced “GO GOs” while his campaign strategist, Moten, chased down Fenty’s 60+ year old opponent in an empty parking lot.

Tales from Fenty’s joke of a re-election campaign are ready for TMZ and Saturday Night LIve. Sarah Palin ain’t go nothing DC's Mayor Fenty!

What PDV describes is not a debate, rather a town hall meeting.

Don't worry though, its not uncommon for your crew not to know the fundamentals of elections. The write in effort, for example, is being led by someone who descibed to the Post the general election as a "nomination." ("We are confident that he will accept the nomination.")

Nominations occur in primary elections. Debates are only between candidates.

You can attend any town hall and even ask questions there, just like any other member of the public.
