Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) is on track to leave office Jan 2. having just achieved the fewest yearly number of homicides in decades, perhaps improving on his administration's success last year in bringing the tally down to 143 killings.

Council Chairman-elect Kwame Brown announces transition team
D.C. Council Chairman-elect Kwame R. Brown said Monday he will use his eight-week transition period to conduct a top-to-bottom review of the council's operations to "improve the way the council does business" and to ensure that the government is more "open and responsive to residents."
