Catania says stronger truancy sanctions needed against parents
Henri Cauvin reports on Post Now that D.C. Council member David A. Catania (I-At Large) wants the parents of children who are skipping school to face tougher financial penalties, including the potential loss of welfare benefits.
Speaking on Thursday at a hearing on the mental health needs of children and teens in the District, Catania said parents have been let off the hook for their children's truancy and delinquency. "We have been too soft for too long on this issue," said Catania, chairman of the council's Health Committee.
