A new tool to dig out school data

DCPS unveiled a new "easy-to-use" online tool Monday that it promises will give families unprecedented access to school information as the out-of-boundary school lottery season approaches.

The School Profiles tool, available here , gives parents what officials described as a one-stop-shop for data on academic programs, test scores, community partnerships, demographics and enrollment. It also allows users to customize searches to compare schools.

"This exciting new tool brings transparency to a level we have never seen at DCPS," Interim Chancellor Kaya Henderson said in a statement. "Families now will have greater access to a wealth of information about our schools and greater choice in deciding which DC public school is best for their children."

What happened to the report explaining why the elementary DC-CAS scores dropped this past school year?

It would also be useful to learn about the social climate at these out-of-boundary schools. Many of them, especially the ones west of the park, are welcoming to outsiders. That is important information when determining what environment is best for a child.

It would also be worthwhile to see graduation rates by school and also by sub-group within school. In addition a breakout with special education as a sub-group would be helpful. The special ed. could also be broken out by racial sub-group too.

A breakout by gender would also go a long way to help in determining if a school would be the right choice.

The breakout by subgroup doesn't work -- at least not in any meaningful, expected way.

All subgroup performance is less than the total pass rate.

For instance comparing Ellington, Wilson, Banneker and School W/out Walls (http://www.profiles.dcps.dc.gov/Compare.aspx?tab=1&school=402,471,466,463 )

and breaking out by subgroup the Banneker overall CAS exceeds math score is 100%, but the breakout by race for Black is 57%. (All other racial breakouts for Banneker are N.A. since too few are represented.)

Comparing Wilson (the only HS where demographics and allow population breakout for Black White, Asian/Pacific, Hispanic) shows overall pct at 62% and all others at or below 45%, (B 45, W 29, A/P 44, H 44).

THESE NUMBERS DON'T MAKE SENSE.

DCPS has pretty web site, but as delivered, the data is not reliable or useful.

Just to be clear about how the breakout by subgroup numbers are wrong, if 100% of the whole population scores proficient and above, the entire population of any subgroup must also be 100%.

If everybody in the school (the group as a whole) is passing, then all the blacks in the school are passing too.

But the numbers that are shown says "Everybody is passing"
but also shows that
"Blacks pass rate is 57%"
