Why Cardinals Fans Are Baseball's Best, in 20 Words or Less
After Boz's disposition (cited below) on the merits of baseball in St. Louis, and how we all miss the story because we live on the East Coast, I figured I'd go ask the fans (cited below). Except, in the interest of blog brevity (cited way below) I was gonna ask them to argue that Cardinals fans are baseball's best, in 20 words or less.
Brevity was not running amok in RFK Stadium. Now I know how my editors feel. The best offerings follow.
Mike Dabney of Warrenton: "A picture's worth 1,000 words, right? What's that? [Gesturing with hands in circular motion] That's the arch, the Gateway arch. That's the Cardinals. That's the Cardinals."
Joe Brinkos Jr. of Reston (whose first attempt was about seven times too long, but who gets a pass, because he recognized me and even knew my name from all the ridiculous Bog promos The Editor has been running in The Washington Post for like seven months): "They haven't won the World Series since 1982, but every year the fans believe they're going to win the World Series, and that's passion."
Derek Dewander of Harrisonburg (comparing Cardinals fans and Red Sox fans): "When we went out [to Boston] they was cussing out our players and everything else, but when they went out to St. Louis it was just loyal fans."
(Like this loyal fan, posting moments ago, after Isringhausen's blown save:
If Izzy was a team player he would remove himself as closer. That is the only way he'll get removed from the spot. It's obvious that he can't do it anymore, stop throwing yourself out there. The fans hate you, they've made it blatantly obvious, so just take one for the team and tell TLR you are injured or just can't deal with it anymore.
That blog, by the way, has had more than 400 comments since today's game began. Yowzers.)
Dan Hawley of Williamsburg: "We appreciate good baseball no matter who plays it, we support our team whether they're good or bad."
10 blown saves and 8 losses?....for a CLOSER?...okay if that isn't pathetic pick some other word for it
Curt Williams of Houston: "I think Cardinals fans are the best because we're the most knowledgable and respectful in all of baseball. Go Cardinals."
Absolutely furious. First comment ever. They've got to shut him down. I'm starting to wonder if he is involved in some sort of point-shaving / betting scandal. He seems to will games in favor of the opposition. Just awful.
Rob Smith of Waldorf, describing how one of his friends stole his Albert Pujols rookie card: "I'm going to whoop somebody's [bleep] when I find out who took it."
Matt Hendren of Anchorage: "You get paid to do this?"
