Don't Lose Faith in Those Redskins, Necessarily
[Edit: actual number of words has been upped to 7,825. I forgot Boz.]
After reading the 7,825 words of Redskins coverage in The Washington Post this morning, I was still left wondering how frequently 2-4 teams make the playoffs. (The 7,825 figure doesn't include headlines, photo captions, bylines or agate type and charts.) Here's an answer; over the past three seasons, exactly one 2-4 team advanced to the playoffs: the 2004-05 Packers. Here were the records of playoff teams after six regular season games:
6-0: 4 teams
5-1: 13 teams
4-2: 11 teams
3-3: 7 teams
2-4: 1 team
On the other hand, last year's Skins went 2-4 in one mid-season stretch and still made the playoffs (actually, the full streak was 2-6). On the other other hand, the Skins were the only team in the league last year to make the playoffs after a 2-4 stretch of any kind.
