Prisbell Checks in From Maryland's Media Day
Here's what Maryland beat writer Eric Prisbell had to say in a brief phone conversation....
"Well, Gary's openly lobbying for seven ACC teams to make the NCAA tournament. He says the ACC has to do more to promote itself after last year, with what the Missouri Valley did, and when Maryland left out with an 8-8 conference record.
"The first team goal he said was they're going to be good citizens and they're going to be good students.
"As far as the team goes, they've got a bunch of new freshmen and a bunch of seniors, so it's an interesting dynamic. D.J. Strawberry could play any one of three positions, and Gary could play three or four guards at once. He definitely wants to get back to pressing more; they weren't able to do that the last couple years.
"Both Gary and players criticized last year's team's discipline, their enthusiasm, their defensive play as a whole. D.J.'s the leader of the team, you can see that up front. He's very open about what the problems were and how to fix them.
"They're really driven to get back to the tournament. They're not over-confident, and I kind of felt that last year. They were talking about making the Sweet 16 last year, kind of assuming they'd be in the tournament, and that didn't exactly work out. In terms of chemistry, defensive play and overall enthusiasm, these guys are going to like playing together, and when you've got a leader like Strawberry, his attitude and his play becomes contagious. Gary was openly touting him as one of the best guards in the country."
So there you go. JTIII is still finishing up his TV interviews, and he'll talk to us print folks soon. And I was just joking about the amenities here. I didn't come here for the food court or comfortable chairs. Lighten up out there, people.
