Brent Johnson's New Helmet

But first, the most exciting part of my trip to the phone booth this morning....three Caps employees riding around the building on Segways. They were in Official Segway Training. The team's new game day trick will be to send employees riding around the streets of D.C. on Segways promoting the game. But first they needed training. Not a bad day of work, cruising around Chinatown in Segway training. They were forced to wear helmets though.

I mentioned all this to Ted Leonsis and Gary Bettman when they came to our offices for lunch this afternoon. Tarik will get into all the details over here, which included Bettman saying "we covet the attention, we covet more attention, we covet better-placed attention, to the extent that we can get it," and Leonsis comparing Ovie to a cross between Michael Jordan and John Lennon, and my editor saying that we have no plans to cut our Caps coverage and that Tarik will likely be on the road with the team all season, "and more importantly out of the office, so we don't have to see him, which is a good thing for us."

Anyhow, I mentioned the Segway thing to Ted and Gary, and Ted said that he actually has two Segways since there was once talk of him running Segway, although he's embarassed to ride his Segways around McLean, since he feels like he's in a Red Ferrari or something (i.e., everyone stares at him). His son also has a Segway tricked out for use on the golf course. And Dick Patrick said he's ridden a Segway around Ted's driveway.

Actually, this has nothing to do with Brent Johnson's New Helmet, so I'll post that separately.

Granted, they're just trying to attract onlookers, but what do Segways have to do with the NHL? Wouldn't a clever game-day promotion be to throw a roving roller-hockey game in public spaces across the city?

I need to know. How short is Bettman? He's a midget next to players when he's handing out the Cup, and I can never tell if he's standing on a chair when he's on TV.
