Updates on Previous Bog Items
1) Etan Thomas. Weeks ago, Etan wrote an essay on the black athlete in America for Bog purposes. At the time, I recommended he begin writing for Slam instead. Today is the first installment of what will be a regular column at SLAMOnline.
Etan writes today about people who make sarcastic responses when they learn about his poetry, or when they learn that he's interested in the world of letters. He writes about a referee who told him "you're not as dumb as you look," which Etan thinks the ref would not have said to "Wally Szczerbiak, Steve Nash or my man Steve Blake."
I'm not looking to squeeze an apology from him; don't even want one. Why would he apologize for the way that he feels? That's like Michael Richards apologizing for his racist, hateful rant. Not likening the referee to Kramer, but don't apologize for something you're not sorry about. If you simply regret that people may look at you differently as a result of your feelings, well, that's an apology you can keep.
Stereotype is defined as an oversimplified standardized image or idea held by one person or group of another. It is 2006, and while we have come a long way, unfortunately in many ways we have also regressed.
It's sad that so many people are still governed by stereotypes. But I guess that's the reality that is our present day society.
And then, he concludes with an untitled poem. Frankly, while I appreciate Etan's writing, I'd like to see him try to branch out into other genres. Loosen up a little. This is all too serious and depressing. The Internet was invented for mirth.
2) Dan Shanoff. Weeks and weeks ago I had a brief Blog Feud with Dan Shanoff. Since then, someone has been posting suicidal messages here under his name. Dan would like you all to know that he's very happy, thank you very much, and this poster is not him. Best I can tell, it's Caphcky. I guess I'll just delete all the suicide notes from the fake Shanoff.
3) The Mason Pimp. Last week I posted an item about George Mason's pimp-like new pep band director, Doc Nix. Official Mason Beat Writer Steve Goff reports that Doc Nix reported to duty last night in a sharp white suit, white cap and shades. "Outstanding," Goff said.
4) Playoff Optimism. This morning, I posted an item about irrationally but charmingly optimistic Skins fans who were excited by last night's Seahawks win. I quoted my co-worker, Mitch Rubin, as follows: "These people are idiots." Well, one of the idiots, Stephen Albers, has responded via e-mail:
Just wanted to say, nice bog and your buddy Mitch Rubin sounds like a wet blanket (let's see who the idiot is come January).
In Joe We Trust,
Edit: Mitch has now offered to buy Steve and "as many buddies as he wants" lunch at RFD, plus one round of drinks, if the Skins make the playoffs. "That's how much I'm sure they won't make the playoffs," Mitch said. Steve? Anything?
