What You Need to Know, in a Bunch of Words
Lead story: Heath Shuler returns to D.C., while Stop Shuler hangs 'em up and other athletes mostly lose their races. Also, major Bog friend OffTheMeter launches his visit-all-337-Division I-Arenas challenge in Comcast tonight.
Etan gives a play-by-play of his fight with Brendan while Eddie Jordan says such fights happen "all over the league," and the Pacers could be without Maryland's Sarunas Jasikevicius tonight after a luggage injury. Also, Canada puts Ovechkin on SportsCentre promos, and he's ahead of last year's scoring pace.
While teammates say Bog fave Adam Archuleta's confidence is broken, the somber video pitchman says his contract was a distraction and the criticism will "make me a better player," which would be nice. Incidentally, the WashTimes predicts a 6-10 finish.
Maryland basketball looks more-than-respectable against Hampton (which wasn't embarrassed), setting up tonight's matchup with Mike Lonergan and plucky Vermont, as D.J. Strawberry predicts "something special" for the Terps this season. Bog friend Rick Maese points out that Gary Williams has less official job security than any ACC coach, and a recruiting analyst says "Georgetown owns D.C." Va. Tech cuts out the taunting, Terpish kickers Dan Ennis and Nick Novak hang out, and this week's opponent (Miami) suffers an actual sports tragedy as a DT is killed.
The Nats--who apparently reached out to Bobby Valentine during their managerial search--hire 10 new scouts, including a failed Tampa Bay GM and "some of the brightest minds in baseball." Manny Acta campaigns for the job, axed color man Tom Paciorek says he must have rubbed Stan Kasten the wrong way and Buck Martinez could be his replacement. The O's are still interested in Soriano, and Nick Johnson has surgery. Also, the Phillies are expected to be a major player for Soriano, who doesn't want to leave the East Coast and is beloved by new Phillies [first base coach] Davey Lopes.
