Local Top 11 Hoops Poll, additional pithy comments

The crush of pithy comments about our Local Top 11 came to me on what was sort of a bad day, and I ignored them for 48 hours. But, as I noted last time, I'm never one to turn down a free post, so here goes. Next week I'll do this more promptly. And eventually, I hope not to post anything that's actually written by me.

1. Virginia

Nerds in orange ties rejoice. (Markus Videnieks)

They've figured out the secret to these rankings already: just don't play at all. (Jamie Paquette)

With the way local teams are playing right now, not playing seems to be the surest way of moving up the standings. (Jon Lauder)

Will finish the Sports Bog poll #1 at the end of the season if they continue to play no games. (Ajay Vellore)

I wish I could be this way as a husband: Be inactive all week and still be near the top. (Glenn Arnold)

Whoos overrated? (Matt Mandel)

2. Maryland

Beat Fordham and lost to BC. Gary Williams withdraws petition for exemption for Terps to join new basketball superconference, The Big Jesuit. (Bill Fitzgerald)

This season is a referendum on the senior class. The polls are still open. (Matt Holohan)

I sense collapse and disappointment. (Rob Yunich)

Almost time for exams (in courses like Advanced Rioting and Firemaking) (Matt Branson)

Looks like we are getting back to the Maryland of the 90's: just good enough to get your hopes up and just bad enough to break your heart. (Matt Mandel)

If Maryland wants to stay on top on whatever we're calling this poll, they have to stop losing the day before we vote. (Eric Swensen)

This is actually a vote for the women's team, cuz I'm pretty sure they could take pretty much everyone else below them on the list. (Ed Lee)

The real question after Sunday's game is how in did BC ever lose to Vermont? (Chris King)

Maryland is going to slowly collapse on the season and miss the tournament for the third straight year. According to Gary Williams, it won't be Gary Williams's fault. (Jon Lauder)

My friend at Maryland said he will "punch me in the face if you rank UVA above us." College Park will do that to a person. (Andrew Alberg)

3. Georgetown

This is more of a default position than a recognition of beating JMU. (Steve Argeris)

Might be better than UVA, but have to prove it at some point. (Corey Masisak)

People knock Georgetown's schedule but Oral Roberts (how is that not a school for dentists?) did beat Kansas. Also ORU has a nasty 4x8 led by the dynamic due of Shaun Smith and Prince Mumba (really) - yahoo for track and field. (Jon Lauder)

What a difference it makes when the 7-2 guy decides to dunk the ball. (Nathan Fennessy)

I understand that James Madison, the team I cover, might be one of the worst teams in Division I, but the whupping Georgetown put on the Dukes Tuesday night was really something else, and trust me, in three years covering JMU I've seen my share of whuppings. Georgetown scored 89 points, with the great Roy Hibbert getting only three of those. Of course, against JMU, Dartmouth looked good, so you can make of that what you will. (Dustin Dopirak)

Over/under on # of "Oral Roberts" jokes sent in by voters: 22.5. (Chris Olson) (Under, but not by much.)

4. George Washington

After the 20 point second half lead evaporated I spent most of Saturday afternoon curled into the fetal position. And that was before I even hit the bars. (Clay Travis)

A 20 point lead... gone... poof. One of the worst games I've seen from this squad in ages, but looking at their schedule, that may be the last loss for a while. (Robert Lintott)

USC isn't supposed to be good until next year, guys. (John Taylor)

Snooze... let me know when they beat a decent team (Virginia Tech doesn't count). (Nathan Fennessy)

5. Virginia Tech

At least the losses to mid-majors this season were not at home. That's progress! (Matt Holohan)

They had the best win of the week, at home over Old Dominion (wow, that's not really saying much, is it?) (Eric Swensen)

The CAA's got nothing on the ACC, even the hapless Hokies. (Sean McLernon)

6. Old Dominion

No more big conference schools on their schedule. They could go on a big run now that they are approaching an all-conference schedule. (Markus Videnieks)

Two of the Monarchs' three losses are to ACC teams. Can't wait for CAA play to get in full swing. Lots of good teams in this league. (Adam Littlefield)

Blaine Taylor's moustache is pretty cool. (Jon Lauder)

7. VCU

Could the two impressive road wins this week be the start of something special in Richmond? No. (Ajay Vellore)

Five wins in a row for VCU, by an average of 23 points. It's going to be another fun year in the CAA. (Frank Dale)

Four road wins are good enough for me. Two losses by a combined four points. (Chris King)

This has nothing to do with basketball, but everyone knows that Virginia is a commonwealth, not a state. Hence the name of this school. But Pennsylvania is also a commonwealth. So why is Penn State not called Penn Commonwealth? Is it because no one wanted to called it PCU? (Tim Lemke)

I guess? I mean, again, let's shrink this to Lucky 7 or something... (Tim Lemke)

Wins at Albany and Richmond boost their RPI in the all-important “wins at state capitals category. Better be careful against perennial powers Montpelier and Carson City. (Bill Fitzgerald)

8. George Mason

They should not get votes for losing at Duke. My high school team could lose at Duke. (Adam Kilgore)

On name alone at this point. Mason needs someone to step alongside Will Thomas in the post. Louis Birdsong needs to find some Jai Lewis in his game quickly to save Mason's season. (Markus Videnieks)

Show me another Final Four team that beats Radford by two after trailing the whole game and I'll show you another team who doesn't crack this Top 11. This fairy tale looks like it's going to end up passed out in the gutter. (Jamie Paquette)

Losing by 16 at Duke is okay; winning by two at Radford isn't. (Glenn Arnold)

This ranking is generous considering they trailed Radford by 10 at halftime. With 12 days off, don't be surprised to see the Patriots in the "Also Receiving Votes" category next week. (Mark Cunningham)

9. Navy

Still better than American as far as I am concerned. (Adam Littlefield)

The Patriot League does model itself as the baby brother of the Ivy League - and Penn reminded baby brother who was king. (Nathan Fennessy)

At least they have a bowl game coming up... (Doug McKinney)

Got embarrassed at home by an Ivy League team. Not good. (Kathy Orton)

Tough loss to the Quakers, but a gutsy win in double OT against Howard. By the way, I live next to a Howard dorm that is outside its campus, and after the Bison beat UMES, there were 4 kegs rolled off the campus shuttle bus that brings students to their dorm. There were literally 100 20-year olds laughing hysterically at whoever came up with the idea. (Sean Perkins)

It was either this or leave the 10th spot blank. (Eric Swensen)

10. Towson

Finally ready to shake the curse of the Jewish Jordan. (Thigh Master)

Overcame the glare of thousands of empty yellow seats to win at William & Mary. (Eric Swensen)

Nowhere on the sports.yahoo.com team page is Pat Kennedy listed as coach. I miss pat in the ACC though. I wonder if he still looks clueless. (Ed Lee)

Cannot discount Pat's Cats, even if their RPI is inflated by blowout losses to Kansas and Western Kenucky. (Corey Masisak)

Hold on to your lacrosse sticks, people. Towson may be the CAA's sleeper team. (Sean McLernon)

Gary Neal keeps on scoring and the Tigers keep on winning. That Georgetown game on December 20 will have huge Bog Poll implications. (Adam Littlefield)

Gary Neal cracks the top 10 by himself. (Dustin Dopirak)

11. American

Almost dropped completely due to the handy beating given by the future leaders of the world. (Marc Gallant)

Once promising season runs into annual powerhouse Yale buzzsaw. (Ajay Vellore)

Thiiiiiiis is myyyy counnnnnnnnnnnntry. (Andrew Alberg)

I went to summer camp here one time. i think it was the location of the first time i kissed a girl that wasnt my mommy or didnt think i had cooties. memories....... (Ed Lee)

Just got drilled at 2-6 Yale and still gets a vote, which shows how quickly this region is degenerating. (Adam Kilgore)

President Bush throws kegger at White House to celebrate Yale's victory over AU. (Ted Gotsch)

Despite the skull and boning that the Yalies did to them, they are still worthy, like James. (Thigh Master)

My number 11 vote would have gone to UDC, and I'm not sure they have a team.
