What You Need to Know

Playoffs? Try a non-winning record for the fifth time in six years and blood on Gibbs's hands, despite the team's best offensive showing since Week 4. (The Skins are now as close to landing the No. 1 pick as they are to the playoffs.) Ladell Betts could be in for a pay raise, still no idea who'll be kicking next week, the defense couldn't stop Vick, Jason Campbell looked overwhelmed and erratic and seems to be going backwards, but Brandon Lloyd urges patience.

Columnists: This team has no idea how to finish (Dan Daly) and could be the worst Joe Gibbs team ever (Rick Snider). The Redskins are "pitiful" (Terence Moore) and offer us no way to judge Vick's performance (Bob Molinaro). What was with the kooky bells-and-whistles play-calling (Les Carpenter)? And the J.C. project could take a while (Boz).

Notre Dame remains dominant in D.C. on a "crummy night" for Maryland, which lost thanks to lousy defense and a weird momentum shift that all conjured up memories of the past.
Carl "Big Shot" Elliott carries GW down the stretch against Va. Tech, whose player say they gave it away. George Mason missed another big opportunity, taking too many outside shots and dealing with unresolved lineup questions, while Bucknell won after a lineup change of its own. Dave Leitao uses a vaguely described but "explicit" speech to spur the Cavs to a show of bravado and their first 1-0 ACC start in more than a decade. (Will it be enough to give them first place in the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Hoops Poll? Check back around 1 p.m. And someone suggest a better name for the poll, please.)

In football, Maryland is excited to play Purdue in the Blah Bowl thanks to some extreme lobbying, leaving both Navy and Boston College disappointed. Va. Tech will play Georgia for the first time since '32 in the EatMoreChikn Bowl.

Caron Butler says a win against streaking Dallas tonight could change the Wiz's season, and the Reds will file a grievance against the Nats. Finally, Mike Vogel launches a defense of Ovechkin's hit in HSBC South, while the Sabres are irate and Kara Yorio says it was dirty. (So does Empty Maybe.)
