What You Need to Know

In front of Britney and friends, Gilbert gets 31 in the 4th Q and OT en route to a Wiz-record 60 points, the most against the Lakers in 40 years. A non-gracious Kobe says Gil has a mentality of "just chucking it up there," Gil talks about his dreams of playing for L.A. and says the 60 points were "a Christmas present to myself," Charley Rosen says Gil must be Superman for the Wiz to advance deep in the playoffs, and an impressed Washingtonpost.com calls him Agent Zero. Also, a depleted Denver roster could be another Xmas gift.

With a defense that made New Orleans adjust, the suddenly confident 'Skins get a road win, and Joe Gibbs has "never been prouder." The Saints get their division championship hats (and Renaldo Wynn felt disrespected), but Sean Payton says New Orleans was flat. Ladell Betts admits his emergence is surprising, Carlos Rogers celebrates, O-line fill-in Todd Wade "played his butt off," Gregg Williams had "an unbelievable sense of calm" during the last drive, here's a vote for Danny Smith for Washington's Coach of the Year, and Mark Brunell pretends to be Drew Brees.

Columnists: Skins can make lemonade out of this lemon of a season (Dan Daly). This was how the Skins were supposed to play this year (Paul Woody), and this team should have been a contender (Rick Snider). More on those horribly offensive championship hats (Boz).

After winning a league opener for the first time in a decade, Local No. 5 Va. Tech will be in first place in the ACC for three weeks while getting ready for a brutal January. Local No. 9 Navy crushes a DIII school, and a guard for Local No. 6 ODU bounces back after being shot last winter. The U-Conn. women come to Charlottesville for the first time since '92, leading to a clash of local high school stars.

And a British paper wonders whether Freddy will ever reach his true potential.

Nothing about the Capitals huge weekend, and AO's 6 points in 2 games, including a OT hat-trick game winner?

OMG who cares about the last-place Redskins? YAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWN.

C-A-P-S Caps Caps Caps! DC's only good team!

Everyone check out the espn.com Daily Dime headline...yep, Agent Zero fever is sweeping the nation...

Does Freddy count as local news anymore?

So, let me get this right...Kobe thinks that Gil has no conscience? Really? The guy who attempted 38 shots against Houston on Friday night thinks that GIL doesn't have a conscience? The guy who averaged 27.5 FGAs a game last season...

How many points did Kobe's teammates get when he scored 81? Butler and Jamison put up 51, they combined for 111 points!

Kobe is beef. A fish breathes through its Gils. AO is everything.

A non-gracious Kobe says Gil has a mentality of "just chucking it up there,"

That's Kobe's view towards sex, ironically.

Normally I think the hockey guys should be happy with the coverage they get, but the Caps at least deserve a mention for their weekend.

That being said, in nearly 30 years of watching Bullets/Wizards basketball, last night's game is easily in the top five all time.

And did anyone else find Carmelo Anthony's punch and run at MSG oddly reminiscent of Brenda's retreat against the Bulls a few years back? Does that make Brenda tougher, or Caremlo more of a sissy?

I try to link to stories from the current day. I couldn't find a single Caps story from this AM, other than items about their deceased minority owner. If anyone has good links from today, send em along.

Ovechkin is doing a Chat with ESPN.com at 1 pm, btw.

That's what I mean -- sports eds are absurdly infatuated with a crappy football team. So much so that there are no stories in today's papers about the only winning team in town. Shame.

Posted by: Tyler | December 18, 2006 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Well, fair enough. But the Caps are no longer the only winning team in town. The Wizards are 12-11, and currently occupy the sixth seed in the East, same as the Caps. And as CapsNut pointed out, since overtime losses can't exactly be dismissed, the Caps' 15 wins in 32 tries actually give them a lower winning percentage than the Wiz. But your point is well taken.

The Caps were off yesterday, so, even if Tarik or Dave had an idea of something to write about, chances are the editors wouldn't have wanted them to write it and it wouldn't have been printed. Not unusual for a day off between games.

I was amazed to see the kind of coverage Friday's game got in the Post. I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish by it - and it was funny that the game wound up being "just" a good hockey game with not fights.

Posted by: Andrea | December 18, 2006 11:07 AM | Report abuse

Hey Dan, how about you mention to your editors that there was no Caps content in their paper today, despite the fact that most college basketball teams took the week off.

There's about 10 different articles in the Philly papers about the game on Saturday (mostly about Forsberg getting knocked out), why not point out a couple of them?

Posted by: FS | December 18, 2006 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Steinbog, coming alive with that last comment! Enough whining from Caps fans that they are "the only winning team in town." Enough. I love your response about the winning percentages...plus, there is no question that on a day after Gilbert Arenas scores 60 in one of the best Bullets/Wizards games ever, that should be dominating the headlines.

Posted by: NoConscience | December 18, 2006 11:11 AM | Report abuse

Andrea, there is almost always SOME caps content in the sports section, no matter if the Caps played or not. This is only the third day this month that there has not been a Caps article in the paper, and it comes after HUGE back to back wins against two of our three biggest rivals.

Where the FIZZNUCKLE is my Towson St. coverage? No article again?

The crowd wasn't booing Britney, they were just unhappy it was her face that flashed on the scoreboard.

um, how many people do you know that reach their full potential at 17?!
Other than the a hole jock that won the state title in Football in HS but now works at a gas station.
Freddy will be fine, he's a KID! with one hell of an income!
Besides he'll have Nicky to whip his butt into shape.

Sway out!

I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the Redskins for shutting down two of my key fantasy football players (Drew Brees and Marques Colston) during my league's playoffs. Deciding to play well this week, in a game that will gain your team nothing, is truly a show of heart, determination, and hatred of yours truly. Wonderful timing, really.

Jerks.

I'd like to thank the skins for costing me $110 of survival pool money by actually playing a decent game for the first time all season.

Posted by: Marc | December 18, 2006 1:53 PM | Report abuse

I would like to join Chest in a heartfelt - F U to the Skins...Marques Colston and Devery Henderson were my ticket this week against LT and Frank Gore...but NOOOOOO, the 'Skins decided to play.

ACCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!

Hope your first round draft pick is a Ryan Leaf clone.

Are some of you just NOW figuring out that this city revolves around the Redskins? I'm a fan of pretty much every DC area team, professional and college, but the 'Skins are simply "DC's Team". Even though Snyder has infuriated a lot of fans, I'd say there are still more people in the area who follow the Skins closely than the rest of the teams combined (United, Caps, Wiz etc). I know it isn't true for everyone (I chose United over the Skins vs Cowboys game) but for the majority that aren't typical "Sport's Junkies" it is.

Come on now, would Kobe be anything but non-gracious? What else is new.

I agree with the masses. More Caps, more of the time!
