Three Weekend Wiz Items

1) As mentioned in comments, The Smoking Gun posted Gil's mug shot from last spring. Nice enough photo. 2) Reader Richard notes that Bill Walton has Caron Butler as an all-star starter. Yes, a starter. This would be an appropriate time to revisit the Detroit Bad Boys's homage to Bill....

I Meet the Chesapeake Tide

Anyhow, three Chesapeake Tide players were supposed to appear at the Washington Auto Show this evening, but Lawrence Hill couldn't make it and Paul Johnson got the stomach flu, so we were just waiting for Brian Soler. The Tide employees weren't quite sure what position he played; just that he...

In Search of the Chesapeake Tide

I had a lot of fun Wednesday evening waiting for two Redskins to show up an hour late for an autograph session at the Washington Auto Show. But I didn't really want to meet the Redskins. I really wanted to meet the Chesapeake Tide. Careful readers of this Bog will...

Weekend Poll Watching

This weekend offers several chances for Local Poll teams to impress on the road. Local No. 1 Virginia Tech and Local No. 6 Virginia play at Georgia Tech and Clemson, respectively, combined home record of 21-1. Local No. 3 George Washington (5-1 in the Atlantic 10) plays at Rhode Island...

Another Non-Funny George Mason Item

Anyone who watched the Mason-VCU game on Wednesday will remember that sixth man Jamal Shuler was an absolute Mason-killer. He made 7 of 10 shots, hit 3 of 6 three-pointers and scored 17 points, including 12 in the second half when VCU pulled away. Plus he kept doing this thing...

Mason's New Gold Uniforms

I went to watch Local No. 4 VCU face Local No. 7 George Mason on Wednesday night. I was sure funny things would ensue. For example, I figured I'd easily get a blog post out of Mason's new gold uniforms, which the Patriots had worn throughout their winning streak. My...

Renaldo Wynn on His Car Collection

When Renaldo Wynn arrived at the Auto Show yesterday in his Air Jordan warmup suit, he immediately began doing an interview with Kelli Johnson. One of her first questions concerned how many cars he had. He didn't seem to know, exactly. When I asked him about this a few moments...

I went to the Washington Auto Show yesterday hoping to write about the Chesapeake Tide, not the Washington Redskins. Sadly, I saw no signs of the Tide, save for one child in a Tide t-shirt. (Note: If you have any interest in going to the Auto Show, I'd recommend going...

Wilbon Pulling $8 Million?

Apologies if this is old news--maybe I've suppressed it--but Washingtonian says Wilbon's new deal with Disney was four years and just under $8 mil. Which is sort of in the same ballpark as what the typical Post sports blogger makes, in the same way that the Nats' payroll is sort...

[Edit: Caps giving away pizza coupons, not pizzas, sorry for any confusion.] Gil says he watched "Bambi II" instead of the all-star announcement last year? Gil says he'd score 84 or 85 against Duke? (And bloggers not named Dan are getting sick of all this?). Anyhow, tonight he'll face the...

Gil's an All-Star Starter

"A weird, good year," Gilbert calls it. And the best part of being an all-star starter, of course, is that he'll be able to do the Starters' Dance with Shaq. The second-best part is that dude looks like the 7-year-old kids I just saw getting Chris Cooley's autograph, talking about...

After the Suns game the other night, I asked Gilbert whether he'd be playing any poker during all-star game weekend. Raja Bell has been a vegetarian since 1978, which is a lot longer than I have. He doesn't eat beef, pork, chicken, turkey, seafood, any kind of shellfish, eggs, or cheese, except on pizza. He doesn't share my love of Boca's fake meat products; he's just not that interested in...

If you're a blogger who relies on playful locker room banter, you tend to root against crushing home losses. Unless you're covering the Wizards, in which case it doesn't much matter. About 27 media persons were clustered around Gil's locker before he even emerged from the shower last night. He...

Attempting to conjure up some pre-game blog items, I thought of this gem: Boris Diaw's from France. French people love cheese. Ergo, Boris Diaw must have given at least several dozen interviews with cheese journalists in which he discusses his favorites. Sadly, no dice on that one. The best I...

Another untapped angle to tonight's game: the Suns are messing with a superstition, mid-streak? Never, ever mess with facial hair superstition.
