Breaking Billiards News

So our lil' Wizards go 12-4 in December and now everybody loves 'em. The NY Times is here at practice today. So is Yahoo!!!!!!! Sports. So is the beret-wearing AP. But I'm guessing I have an exclusive here:

[Pause for drama]

The Wizards are right now, as I type, replacing the cloth on the pool table in their players lounge!!!!! So much for not messing with success.

I know this because the guys from Champions Billiards wanted me to let them into the players lounge, an act which I was powerless to make happen. But once they were let in, I followed.

The old cloth was Wizards blue with a massive Wizard in the middle, with the Wizard shooting out lightning bolts and casting spells and all that. The new cloth will still have the Wizard, but no more lightning bolts. The guy from Champions thought a player had complained about being distracted by the lightning bolts, but a high-ranking team official disagreed.

"We're a little bit more low key," VP of basketball administration Tommy Sheppard told me. "We just like to be understated."

While inside the luxuriant lounge, I noticed that there was a Terminator 3 pinball machine, and an Arcade Legends video game machine, and a Megatouch Force 2005 game, which sounds like something Mark Foley would be into. "Come experience my megatouch force," and all that. Although all the machines were turned off. Plus they have XBox and PSIII and Wii and all that you'd expect them to have.

The Caps, I'm told, have a much more modest players lounge, with a big screen TV and not much more, but they'll have more fixin's out in Ballston, including a pool table of their own. I asked whether said pool table would have a Caps logo.

"Unknown at this time," PR guy Nate Ewell said.

Keep in mind that this is the only team in perhaps the history of organized sports that features gold (not yellow "gold") and black 3rd uniforms. I'm not sure what to call it, but "understated" is definitely not the correct terminology in describing the Wizshow.

For years he toiled
And paid his dues
Just so he could write

I'm going to be saying "megatouch force" and giggling the rest of the day now.

Wiz and Arenas will continue to be "underated" until they actually make a decent play off run. Beating a young Bulls team in the first round 2 years ago wasn't anything out of the ordinary.

Arenas choking on game 6 free throws last year vs. Cleveland is why Arenas should shut up until play off time.

My understanding is that EVERYTHING the Caps have at Verizon Center is more low-key. Like having their locker room broken into, not being allowed to hang up the NHL banners, and all that jazz.

You should shut-up now in regular season time!
