Caron Butler's New Nike Shoes
So for the past several days of practice, Caron Butler has been wearing his new exclusive special spectacular Nike Air Force 25s, in Wiz colors, bearing his special 3D insignia. He's been breaking them in at practice and said he's about ready to wear them in a game, possibly as soon as tomorrow night at Detroit. He explained that he recently signed a new deal with Nike, and that after being in the Huarache 2K7 last year he decided he would switch to the Air Force 25.
I asked if the shoe would be available in retail.
"Definitely we're going to do something regionally in the near future, but I'm just happy to have my own little shoe now," Caron said.
I asked which shoe looked better, Caron's or the Gil-Zero.
"Ask Gil how these look," Caron said. "C'mon, man, they're Nike. Nike's always look good."
(Go look at Gil's shoes here, and feel free to judge for yourself.)
The 3D, incidentally, stands for "Determination, Dedication and Discipline." I wasn't sure whether that insignia would be on other Air Force 25's; it will not, he told me.
"Then they wouldn't be an exclusive shoe, baby," Caron said.
I guess I should have known this, but "3D" is also the name of his summer basketball camp, whose Web site appears to be written in Latin. I asked Caron for the origins of the 3D thing.
"C'mon, baby, I've got to tell you everything?" he said. "You're the reporter, do some research."
Well, if there is some grander origin, my two minutes of reportorial research didn't uncover it. I found this posting about Indian dance styles in which the author brags that he or she used the three D's to learn "both Bharatanatyam as well as Odissi." I found one story that quotes Pat Riley using those three terms consecutively, but not calling them the 3 D's. I found another story about a Michael Cooper basketball clinic in which he preaches the Five D's (adding desire and decision making). I found 84 Caron Butler stories that were printed on page 3D of various newspapers. Harry Potter has 3 D's, but they're different.
Does anyone know what's with the 3D? Is that a Riley thing?
Here's an Air Force 25 commercial, not featuring Caron Butler:
