Early D.C. United Quotes

Nothing yet from star No. 1, Christian Laettner. Nothing yet from star No. 2, Marion Barry. Lots from Eleanor Holmes Norton.

"We can't be a world-class city without major sports teams and here, heavens, we not only have a major team, we have a winning one at that," she said.

"We have our Nationals and our Wizards and our Mystics and the Redskins who are rumored to come back home to where they belong (applause), but I'm telling you there's never been a D.C. team that's had the incomparable record of D.C. United," she said.

"Don't worry, I'm working on it," she said of the federal land transfer necessary for a new DCU stadium.

"When our Santa Claus got sick this year, [Judah Cooks] stpped right in there, put on the suit like a good soccer player does and substituted. The Post ran a big picture," she said. Word.

"We definitely appreciate winners in the District of Columbia, but I think there's a growing excitement over soccer in the nation's capital that's unescapable," the mayor said.

"This is a place, a home if you will for perhaps the most storied club in Major League Soccer, the famous, if you will, D.C. United," the commish said. The new ownership group "represents the new America that Major League Soccer is so proud to represent," he said.

Now Kevin Payne, the team prez, is talking about his early meetings with Barry, and the responsibility to the community, and all that. But he's stopping. "You hear from me too often," he said.

Oh, and Big Rob, one of the Elders of Barra, is here. Can't wait for the drinking and stomping to commence.

Oh, and Bog friend and D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray said he just learned that Brian Davis is married to his cousin.

"Giving new meaning to family-owned business," he said.

"Ha ha ha ha," everyone else said.

Vincent Gray also said you can walk away from the sport of soccer without major injuries. Someone tell Esky.

The four MLS trophies are in the back, right behind me, actually. Two guys are standing in front of the table. I guess they're the guards.

Vincent Gray obviously missed the Dema Kovalenko years at RFK.

Apparently Eleanor Holmes Norton has never heard of the Caps. What a shocker, hot air coming out of a windbag.
