Gilbert Thoughts, Part III: "It's like I'm a little ghost in this little circuit"

Various other Gilbert thoughts. And in this installment, he says

1) That he's really just joking about his constant search for motivation.

2) That's he's constantly searching for motivation.

3) That he's not in Kobe's league.

4) That he arrived as an elite player a long time ago.

Dude is large. He contradicts himself. He contains multitudes.

On his bum shoulder: I've had worse injuries. I'll be fine. Just a little bugger right now going into the New Year. [Yes, he'll play tomorrow night]

On the old-new-old ball: We were complaining, and then you just go out there and you just shoot shots, and you see how easy they're falling in, or you see the bounces you're getting. Especially when I started off this season at the free-throw line, I said, 'Oh man, I love this ball. It's bouncing and they're dying on the rim.' And then eventually, it's like once [David Stern] made that rule--'Yeah we're changing back on January 1st'--I'm like, 'Ohhh, why did we complain so much?' We just never learn. It's like we're fighting for something that we don't want. Guess it's pride. That's what it was, I think it was just pride that we wanted our old ball back.

What is potential? What is rebuilding? (John McDonnell - The Washington Post)

On where the Wiz would finish in the West: You know, we wonder, if we was in the West where would we be? Would we be in the top four, top five, or are we just better off in the East? And we see ourselves trying to seed ourselves, and we're like, 'Man we really don't want to be the No. 1 team in the East,' because that No. 1 team, for being number one you might get a handshake and say, 'Hey, there's Miami at 8.'

On whether not making the Olympic team has given him a motivational edge: No, you know, I think I just have it. I just use things just for entertainment. I think I just use it for entertainment. You know, like scoring 50 against the Suns and 50 against what's-their-name. You know, it's more like if I do it I'm going to be a hero, if I don't do it, it's like, 'Oh, he didn't do it.' Basically it was a win-win for me anyway. That's what I am. I'm a character, and I like staying stuff just to challenge myself.

On Kobe: Truthfully, it's hard to go at somebody who's the best player in the league. That's just like Dominique going at M.J. It's like, 'C'mon now, you know you're not even in his league.' So there's no point. Truthfully, there's no point....It's hard for me sometimes, when I hear LeBron or D-Wade [as] the No. 1 players in this league, and it's like they look past what [Kobe's] done, what A.I.'s done, because they're getting older. At the end of the day, until they're gone, until they're getting dominated, they're still the No. 1 and 2 players in this league.

On whether he's arrived in that conversation: You know, in my mind I arrived a long time ago. It's just convincing everybody else that I arrived. You know, I seen one stat last year, how they had the No. 1 scorer, 2, 3, 5, and they compared what they do against each other, and it was kind of funny because Calvin [Booth], he put in there and he said what I do against them, and my numbers was up there, too. It's like I'm a little ghost in this little circuit.

More on Calvin: You know, Calvin is the coach-slash-GM. Yeah, you should have heard him around A.I. time....He just threw guys in there for A.I. I was like, 'Wait is that happening?' 'Oh no, I just thought about that all last night. The contracts match up.' It's like, all right, Calvin.

Yet more on Calvin: Do you know the four second-round players that are averaging over 20? [Gil, Michael Redd, Carlos Boozer, Rashard Lewis, according to Gil, who said he got the stat from Cal Booth.]

Calvin Booth on this stat: I didn't say that. I didn't start that out. I don't know who started it. I think it was right though...I don't know who put that out there. That wasn't me.

Gil on Michael Redd: It's so funny. He told me when we was at halfcourt [on Saturday], he was like, 'They said second-rounders couldn't play, now look at us.'

On whether they should have been drafted higher: I wouldn't want to be. I'd rather be where I got drafted. I don't look at numbers. You know, that's the only thing I don't like about drafts, is a thing that's called 'potential.' What is 'potential?' Are you potentially good, or are you gonna potentially be good?... I focused on it more when it was my draft, and it's like this 'potential' word. It's like, what is it? Either you're good or you're not, either you have heart or you don't. You can't give someone a heart.

And here's another thing that confuses Gil: And I don't want to be stuck where someone's like, 'Oh yeah, we've got to trade him, he's a negative part of the team, we need to rebuild.' What is this 'rebuilding' thing people be doing now? What is it? I mean, what does 'rebuilding' mean? It's like, when did Dallas rebuild?

On the details of his jersey giveaway night: I don't know. I know there's 20,000 people in the arena, and I've got one jersey for everyone.

Gilbert jersey giveaway night: Think this, times 20,000. (Jonathan Newton - The Washington Post)

On last summer: You know, usually I will manage my body during the summer. I'll work every day, but I'll manage it. But after [national team camp], I just beat my body up. I was lifting really hard, I was coming here shooting thousands of shots, running the bleachers, riding my bike. I was just trying to cram everything in. It's like for some reason in my mind it was like during that [team camp] I missed a lot of stuff. That's what I was thinking, I missed I missed I missed. You know, traveling over there, I missed weeks of doing what I do, so it was like, 'ok, let me just cram it all in at one time.'

On whether other players respond to their fans via MySpace pages: I know a lot of players have them. You know what, there's some older guys that have it too, there's some older players that have MySpace too, but I don't think they interact with the fans. I think they interact with the girls.

On his MySpace fans: One kid was like, 'I loved your shoes so much I bought 12 [pairs] of them.' I was like, 'Why'd you buy 12?' 'I don't know, just in case one of them got dirty or somebody tried to steal a pair or my mom wanted to hide a pair. She only knows I have two, but I hid the other nine.' I was like, 'What is this?' But it's funny. It's like wow, ok.

On whether he'd still be motivated if he won the scoring title and the Wiz won the NBA title: Yeah. Cuz you know why? Someone's gonna write something negative. Someone's gonna write something, and as soon as they write it, I'm gonna be there to look at it. You know, I won't read nothing else and then I'll hit the [negative]. That negative just attracts me.

On whether he's ever been this hot: In high school. It was great. You know, I averaged like 40-something in high school. I go through scoring spurts. But right now I hit my stride faster than I usually do in the past. Usually it's this month. Or I go on that binge and after [the All-Star break] is when I really kick in. But this year it came a little earlier than I expected.

So what's gonna happen in January? We're about to find out.

That MySpace kid is going to grow up to be just like Arenas, collecting like crazy and whatnots... I think I saw a Dominique MySpace once, but I was too shocked to let anyone else know about it.

Jersey giveaway? What's that about?

Posted by: Ben | January 2, 2007 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Unclear on the jersey giveaway. Apparently Gil is giving away 20,000 jerseys at a later home game. He said he didn't know which game, but that it would definitely be a game that was sold out. He said the company is still making the jerseys.

Does Gil actually think 2 and 9 make 12 or is that the kid?

Yeah, further updates on jersey giveaway night would be appreciated. I don't want to be giving away my seats on the wrong night.

I liked his Gil's comment on rebuilding. Every time there is something wrong, a losing streak, they look to point fingers. Unless you have a real problem, Artest, Iverson, Maggette, try to work it out, because the team doesn't win, so try to work it out, keep things quiet. But teams that stay together, that haven't made crazy moves, have maintained most of their core. He mentioned Dallas, there's also Detroit, San Antonio, those are the 3 best teams in the league I think, some wanna throw in Phoenix, they can't play defense.

I like him throwing out a jersey, its a nice thing to do. I think in the US, the NBA has a horrible rap, and its because the media, the league, the everything wants to bring out the horrible in someone, and forget good, good news doesn't sell, catastrophes sell. Journalists were career-happy after 9/11, just like a doctor would be if typhus came out.

"You know, like scoring 50 against the Suns and 50 against what's-their-name."

stellar. if we could convince other teams to refer to the wizards as 'what's their name,' gilbert might get so motivated that he'd /average/ 50 points a game.

I love the idea of Gilbert quoting Whitman, but I imagine Etan Thomas is the more likely candidate. I eagerly await "In (3-2 Zone) Defense of Poetry"

On Gil's Myspace: You Know I added him a couple days ago. He still didn't accept me, I saw most of his friends (400+) are 90% females. Lol I guess he's only accepting friend requests from the ladies. :/
