Nats Caravan Kicks Off

So when I got to Kimball Elementary in Southeast, Manny Acta and Nook Logan were already here. They weren't being mobbed by the kids. Neither were Official Nats Beat Writer Barry Svrluga, Wash Times columnist Thom Loverro, or NBC's Tom Sherwood. Then Screech and Giant Teddy Roosevelt arrived. They were mobbed. They were also hugged. They danced and shook their bodies. The mascots, I mean. The kids screeched and screeched and screeched.

"Oh good," Barry said. "Teddy's here."

So we have more mascots than players, which makes this event just perfect for me. Teddy is wandering around, the tassle on his glasses dangling to and fro. Screech is doing his typical thing, approaching the hyperventilating kids and grinding on them. It's very, very odd.

In other developments, the kids sang the Kimball school song, the little kid who welcomed us here included GW's own Mike O'Connor in his welcome even though he's not here, Manny Acta's wife showed up, so did the TV people, and there's a giant sign that says "Success comes in cans, not in cannots," and I spent several minutes thinking it said, "Success comes in cans, not not in carrots," which is equally true.

Also, I believe the Kimball mascot is a cheetah.

Also, the kids are now in "the learning position."

Also, a bunch of kids in baseball uniforms just did a cheerleader type routine in which each letter of the word NATIONALS stood for something or other.

Also, the feedback on the mic is fairly intense. So they turned off the mic after one little kid attempted to get started three or four times. Manny Acta laughed a big belly laugh. Then the sound system began to make gutteral explosive noises, and Nook Logan began beatboxing on stage. Good times.

The point is the Nats are here to adopt Kimball Elementary. It'll be very touching.

Nast?

More importantly, "the learning position"? I can't be the only one that is creeped out by that, can I?

Were they sitting like pretzels? Back in the (non-PC) day that would be sitting Indian-style...
Think of the fun you'll be having with your new kid and daycare/school - "remember, gentle touches", "use your inside voice please", "don't eat the yellow snow", etc.

I hope the background checks for the Screech guy is more thorough than their search for actual MLB-quality pitching.

Yes, Screech is very very odd. The Nat's mascot is pretty odd to. The shaking.....gut? thing is really weird.
