The Fans the Wiz Deserve: No. 2
Meet Matt Wright. Matt is a senior at North Stafford High. He's only been to a handful of Wiz games in his life. But before going to last night's game, he figured he ought to get a nice outfit. Something that would have him looking fine. Respectable. Something, like, a full-body Wizard costume complete with cape, beard, hood and wand.
"Got to show the spirit," he said.
Indeed. The costume, in case you want to get one of your own, came from Party City in Fredericksburg. It also earned The Wizard an appearance on the 'Tron last night as Fan of the Game. Later, he danced, which was also shown on the 'Tron. In fact, he danced a lot. When I went up to try to interview him, he was dancing, so I needed to wait. (Side note: I'd really like to see a hatted Wizard at a future game. Or maybe a Gandalf. Or even a Wizardess.)
The Wizard admitted the temperature inside the suit was "like an oven," but he said it was all worth it. For one thing, his fandom of the game earned The Wizard free tickets to a future game. For another thing, a lot of fans shouted at him.
"You the Man, stuff like that," he said, freakily anticipating this AM's video presentation. "I think some of the MVP chants were for me."
[Because this item is a little short, I'd like to note once again that the WaPo signs all over the VC promising "Wilbon. Kornheiser. In the Post & Online" probably fail some sort of truth-in-advertisement laws.]
Anyhow, The Wizard's friends sat next to him and laughed much of the night; "they love it, but they don't have the [inner resolve] to do it themselves," he said.
I asked whether The Wizard would be back.
"Well, I won some free tickets," he reminded me. "You will be seeing it again."
