Tip Off Town tips off
I'm sitting here in the nearly empty media room inside the LJVMC, getting ready for my upcoming online chat with Marc Carig. Only about eight other reporters are in here right now, but the work tables are covered with piles and piles of books.
At these multi-team events, we sportswriters are loaded down with lots and lots of media guides: each school provides its usual glossy guide, along with a smaller "postseason" version, which includes updated bios and newspaper clippings, plus you have the Final Four record book and conference guides, CBS's guide.... etc. No one actually carries all the books in his or her bag, so people leave them on the table, usually with a sign that says "Please leave here" or "Don't move!!" (I went with an understated "Please do not move. Thanks!") But this is why the Boston Globe's Bob Ryan is quickly becoming a favorite of the blog in Tip Off Town - his sign simply says, "Have a heart!"
Anyway, I have braced myself for a sea of Carolina blue today. Yesterday's early practice sessions were sparsely attended, but the Tar Heels' 5:10 practice drew 6,000 fans (according to the Greensboro paper). Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina's opponent today, averaged 2,527 fans for their home games.
