Tipoff in seven hours

Up bright and early for a full day of basketball at the St. Pete Times Forum. Games are only seven short hours away, but word on the streets of Tampa is that the first game could be the most compelling of this four-day event. Clemson and Florida State are both desperate clubs and this game should serve as an elimination contest. Both teams entered the season expecting to make the tournament. No more than one will. Perhaps neither will. Everyone wants to catch a glimpse, perhaps a final glimpse, of Al Thornton, who likely will be a lottery pick in June's NBA draft.

The other game that could be somewhat interesting is Duke-N.C. State because neither will have much depth. It would not surprise many here if State wins, although I'm going with Duke.

The plan for the day: Adam Kilgore and I will provide updates throughout the day as games progress. I'll make every attempt to chime in at halftime with an update about the Terps.

This ACC bracket is so difficult to predict that it is reasonable someone could get every game wrong starting with Friday's quarterfinals. That said, Kilgore has Georgia Tech winning it; I have North Carolina over Virginia. Most importantly, we asked a delightful woman named Page her thoughts and she emphatically said North Carolina will win the event.

Please chime in with predictions; this bracket is not easy to project. Adam and I will jump on an online chat at 11 a.m., so please fire questions at us at that point.

When's the last time the ACC tournament started with no clear 1-2 favorites? It seems wide open this year. Having said that, I predict UNC will pull it out and wrap up their #1 seed in the tourney, where they will then lose in the sweet 16.
