At the front gate
Free red hats, free pocket schedules, a jazz combo, lots of people with video cameras and Stan Kasten.
"What's up, dude," he said, marking the first time an MLB exec has ever said that particular phrase in my presence.
He's been up since 5 a.m. Incidentally, it's worth noting that Barry Svrluga is also blogging this event, likely with more success. I asked him what he was blogging about.
"Baseball," he said, which made the other media folks very happy, the implication being that I do not write much about actual sports, which is true.
Which leads me to the U.S. Army Band, "Pershing's Own," which I mentioned below. I asked for the set list; "that's classified," one of the guys told me.
But really, they'll be playing "Crazy," "Mony Mony" and "Let's Hear It For the Boy." That's hot.
"It'll be smokin' hot in a minute," Staff Seargeant Eric Seay agreed.
Also, Seay told me something very special that will happen during today's Giant Racing President's Race. He didn't know the principal actor in this special something was a Giant President; he thought he was a "Hamburger Head." But the event will surely make SportsCenter, put it that way. My heart won't stop racing.
Anyhow, an old guy wearing baseball pants and high red socks just walked in the gate and I have to chase after him now.
