Art Monk for Hall of Fame: The Song
When one of the representatives from The DirtBags, my favorite D.C. sports team-themed rock band, e-mailed me their musical entreaty to put Art Monk in the Hall of Fame, I was initially reluctant, based on the oft-repeated lyric that drives the song: "Peter King is a Queen." But today's Redskins video, below, made me remember The DirtBags, and upon a second listening, I'm pretty sure that the band is using "Queen" not in a derogatory anti-gay manner, but rather in a more generic "that which is female is weaker than that which is male" manner, which, while technically still against the 2007 rules, at least probably shouldn't get me fired.
If you find that objectionable, I'd instead commend you to The DirtBags' new song "Ron Mexico," which for all I know might also have objectionable lyrics, but you can't really understand all of them, so we should be safe.
Anyhow, by the end of "King of Queens," the 'Bags aren't really talking about Peter King any more. They're just serenading Art Monk. "Put Art Monk in the Hall of Fame," they sing, over and over, voices cracking at times, strumming hard on the 'Skins fans' heartstrings. It comes from the soul, and you have to respect that.
Incidentally, Blog Show is still looking for occasional guest musical contributors. The DirtBags are high on the list of possibilities.
