Brian Billick Does Commencement
Camille Powell just reminded me that Brian Billick is giving a commencement address at Johns Hopkins today. You know, just so those kiddies understand that there are people in the world more genius than they. He's actually the speaker at the The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and The G.W.C Whiting School of Engineering Undergraduate Diploma Award Ceremony, which, by the time you get through that part of it, will hardly leave room for him to say anything.
As reported by Camille, here's a preview of his speech, delivered to the Ravens media corps today: "Welcome to the real world, because what you think is the real world, you've got no clue yet."
To which I would only add, 10 years from now, you probably still won't have a clue, but maybe you'll be lucky enough to be sitting in a baseball press box, listening to WTOP's Craig Heist talking baseball while transcribing interviews about American Idol.
Camille further points out that two years ago, Billick delivered the commencement address at Maryland's Baltimore campus.. And it went pretty well, judging by this excerpt:
"If you 'Google' the word leadership, you'll get 150 million hits. If you 'Google' the word followership, you'll get a little over 30,000 hits, but the two--leadership and followership--are interchangeable," he said.
No kidding. If you google the word "the" you get a tad more than 5 billion hits. If you google the word "asdfhasopdfsadfj," you get zero hits. Amazing.
Anyhow, today's Baltimore Sun story gives further highlights from that
UMBC UM-Baltimore speech:
When Billick speaks at the Johns Hopkins graduation today, he promises to deliver a different speech from the one he gave two years ago. "No vasectomy stories this time," he said. At the 2005 commencement for the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Billick spoke about "empathy training" for those who will enter the medical field and began his speech by talking about how nurses asked for his autograph in the middle of his vasectomy.
Had trouble thinking of the final line for this entry. All I could come up with was this: I wonder if any Ravens rookies ask Billick for his autograph while he's making cuts.
