The Nats on American Idol

Remember earlier today, when I asked Robert Fick for his take on the sporting issues of the day? Well, I also asked about last night's "American Idol" results, figuring he would not be a fan.

"I just think it's the way she looks," he said of Melinda and her untimely exit. "Melinda was 29. I don't know. Melinda's the best singer, she is. But the way she looks, she doesn't look like the American Idol."

Point being, he loves Idol. Been watching for years. I asked for his favorite contestant this season.

"I liked Gina Glocksen the best," he said. "I thought she was good, and I thought she got screwed."

He told me Dmitri Young was also a fan. So I waited for Young to appear.

"I love it," Da Meat Hook said, completely seriously. He said he TiVos every episode, and has been watching since Season One. He, too, had an opinion about last night.

"I thought it was going to be a girls final, I thought Blake was done," he said. "Melinda can sing. The fans voted, they're the ones that chose. She has the voice. She's going to have a record deal anyhow. Somebody's going to pick her up, because she definitely can sing, she has the voice. But I think Jordin Sparks will win."

Meanwhile, Fredericksburg beat guy Todd Jacobson told me that John Patterson is also an "Idol" fan, which turns out to be true. Patterson said he watched it at dinner time with his parents during the offseason, and that he watched it all during Spring Training. He didn't see yesterday's show, but he saw the elimination part and had some thoughts about Melinda's departure.

"I thought she was really great," he said. "I mean, I think she's going to do a record without a doubt, her and LaKisha both, but Jordin's been my favorite for a while. I just like her personality, she seems excited and genuine. [Melinda] probably has the most trained voice, I would say. She's a little older, she's a backup singer, she was used to being on stage, but I don't think that's really what they're looking for in "American Idol," you know what I mean? They're looking for the younger [singers], somebody they can kind of do what they want with, put 'em where they want."

Both Patterson and Fick signed off on my Melinda-as-the-Spurs theory. And even better, it turns out that Patterson watches "Project Runway" with his fiancee, former Miss DC Shannon Schambeau. And that he saw Kayne at last year's Miss America pageant. And that he would like to go on "Amazing Race" with his fiancee, or possibly with Brian Schneider; "pitcher-catcher combo," he explained. Either way, I can't imagine that show's producers would object. Hopefully their people will call his people.
