Chuck Norris Makes Gary Bettman Cry

After several months of misery, the NHL finally managed to generate some heat. Yeah. Great. From the Globe and Mail:

Chuck Norris doesn't catch fire.
A CBC broadcast truck almost caught fire during the network's telecast of the NHL Awards show from the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto.

Technical problems resulted, the worst of which affected Versus in the United States. The overheated CBC truck caused transmission difficulties forcing the U.S. cable channel to cancel its live telecast. Instead, it aired a World Combat League show and carried a tape delay of the NHL show at 11 p.m. EDT.

I'm not so sure about this explanation, though. The World Combat League, of course, is the Chuck Norris-presented team-martial arts league, whose teams have disappointingly boring names like the New England Strikers and the Philadelphia Fire. Luckily, they make up for it with player nicknames, such as Rami "Arabian Nightmare" Ibrahim and Sarah "Sugar Foot" Ponce. If Chuck Norris wants on Versus, Versus tells the NHL to cool it for a few and wait for the tape-delay.

[It bears mentioning that the WCL is pursuing mindless expanding, adding the New Jersey Tigers, whose coach is also named Tiger. If the league keeps expanding in this thoughtless manner, it can expect its postseason awards ceremony to one day be preempted by NHL coverage, of something.]

Anyhow, as Off Wing Opinion asks, "Dear God, can the NHL do anything right?" Or as Canes Country demands: "Someone, please, please, please put the NHL out of it's misery. Fire Versus! Fire Gary Bettman!"

Or, as the NHL asks, did someone say fire? [Running towards exits.]

I'm guessing that the WCL ratings were much much higher than the NHL ratings, if it's anything like UFC.

Gary Bettman has ruined hockey. It went from being a sport more popular than basketball and garnering respect from football fans, to being in the trash heap of pro sports. The NHL cannot survive with Gary Bettman around. He made it a niche sport for a few years and now doesn't know how to keep it going long term. But then again, he really didn't have long-term goals in mind when he took the job. Whatever works best for me now, that's what I'll do and that's what they teach in business school now. Next thing you know, he'll make the Caps build a new arena.

Nothing Versus might air could be worse than that abomination of a heavyweight boxing match they had on last night. Hasbeen Rahman pawing away at some bum for 12 rounds while the announcers talked about what a disgrace the fight was.

WCL, unfortunately, is nothing like the UFC. There are teams. No ground game. The ring is this odd shape with sloping sides instead of ropes or a fence. And the format is weird, five or so fighters on a team take a turn in the first half, then they have halftime and come out and do it again in the second. It's weird, the only selling points are constant shots of Chuck Norris in the crowd and pretty constant action.

WEC on Versus is what you want to watch if you're looking for true MMA. Lot of emphasis on the lighter fighters which leads to pretty exciting fights. Wednesday nights.

So typical of the NHL these days...and so sad.

And I don't believe that "fire in the truck" BS story for one second.

" fired in the truck" = canada pissed off at Bettman. After all, he doesn't want any more teams in Canada...
